Belgium declares solidarity with Poland. Prime minister Pierlot said Germany’s neighbours must stand together to contain her. If Warsaw falls today what is to stop the Nazis goose stepping into Brussels in October?
We played 4 seasons of the 1939 scenario. Jon-Germany, Britain+France-Craig, USSR-James, and I was Italy. We each got to chose a variant.
An HQ and units within 4 hexes can be activated a second time each season. UK and US need generals to do this. We never actually used this, I think it could make Barbarossa a walkover.
Belgium begins the game as a French Minor Ally. French units may set up in Belgium. Belgian units may enter any neighbouring country. All Belgian INF units and the TAC factor are available at the start of the game. If France is not at war when the game begins, Belgium is still an ally of France and French units may set up in Belgium. Keeping with the stout performance in the Great War, Belgium does not surrender until every hex of the country is enemy controlled. A strong line behind the Rhine in 1316 and in the Ardennes can be formed with 3 French units and a Belgian, 4 British units SR to Sedan and 1319.
No Spanish Civil War
Spanish BRP (basic resource points) raised from 25 to 45. Remove the Spanish ARM unit from the game but add three 1-3 INF to the At Start forces. Italian BRP value increased from 75 to 100 and the 2-5 ARM that begins in the force pool instead begins with the At Start forces. Italian and German influence drop from 7 to 4 which stopped me trying to get Spain as an ally but the extra Italian BRP made it my choice.
Maginot to the Sea!
France loses 5 BRP’s from her Base and the following from her 1939 Force Pool: 3-5 ARM, 4 x 1-0 GAR, 2 CV. The four removed 1-0 GAR are deployed in hexes 0917, 1017, 1118 and 1218 as Fortresses (their reverse sides). The 2-3 INF/3-3 INF conversions do not begin until 1942. I think the French were short on units to line the Italian front because of these 5 units cut from her forces.
French ground strength split between the German front and the Maginot extension, leaving gaps on the Italian front. I think he listened to my talk about attacking Yugoslavia which had been my plan till I saw his set up. French surface fleet is in the North Sea. The Russians meddled with the French set up, which made me smile because James had told me off for advising my ally too much in the 1942 game we played at the start of the month. Poles failed to surround Warsaw but this let them double stack the only river free approach to their capital.
Russia split between Finland Romania and Persian fronts.
Italian armour on the Yugoslav front was just in reach of France, my stronger 3-3 infantry were hidden, also facing France.
Germany had 8 panzers in the East, inf and gar in the west.
BRP Germany 150, Italy 100, Britain 123, USSR 118, France 85.
Molotov Ribbentrop pact was signed before the war by agreement between the players and US entry was to be no later than Summer 1942. “No event” chits were removed.
Italy seems to be the only nation with landing craft.
Finland, Romania, Spain and Turkey were bribed by both sides. A lot of BRP spent.
Sea zone placement
Germans in the Baltic to isolate Denmark. British and French in North sea, French in Western approaches. Italian, French and British in Western Med.
Declarations of war
Russia on Finland, Sweden, Norway and Britain, has James gone crazy? Italy on France. Britain declined to join France against Italy.
French subs in the med wiped out for no loss in 1 round of naval combat, the 18 surf and 2CV of the Royal Navy stood aside and let it happen.
Italian inf to Tunisian and French fronts, 2 British inf to extended Maginot line and an arm to mask Luxembourg. US BRP to France and Britain
Italy took Marseille and exploited up the Rhone valley.
Italians landed in Algiers and Corsica.
Germany cleared the approach to Warsaw not covered by the Vistula.
Russia advanced through Persia and Finland.
German panzers took Warsaw in regular combat and wiped the rest of the Poles out in exploitation, a para dropped into Copenghagen.
4 French/Belgian corps wiped out attacking Bonn. The French refused to switch units from the extended Maginot line even though it was hopelessly outflanked.
Poland and Denmark surrender to Germany. Algeria surrenders to Italy.
Mild Russian winter. Mussolini always right chit forces me to to declare war on Greece.
Germany builds more panzers next to the low countries.
Russian LC launched in Sevastopol.
French rebuilds losses in Vichy.
Finns forgot to rebuild their losses.
Italy bribes Turkey. Romania and Bulgaria declare on Russia.
Sea zone placement
France to North Sea, Western approaches. Italy to Eastern and central med. British to North Sea.
Declarations of war
Russia on Spain, another sign of his madness. Germany on Holland. Britain lacks the BRP to declare on Italy.
Britain sends 3 inf and 2 arm to the South of France using our neutrality to run right up to me.
Italy sent weak infantry to hold the Greeks out of Albania, actually there was no need as the Greeks cannot enter that colony. Germany sends 2 panzers to the Italians in France and 4 to face Holland.
US BRP to UK and France.
Italians blocked overland supply to Tunisia.
Russians fought hard but are held at Helsinki, they land unopposed at Varna on Bulgaria’s Black sea coast. This gives her passage through the Dardanelles.
Italians landed in Oran and Suda bay. Suda borders 3 sea zones so is a good base for surf and tac going to sea control. I could have had a weak shot at Damascus instead.
Italians breakthrough at Vichy but are repelled from Lyons, exploit to Toulouse, Rennes and the Parisian suburbs, the Italian armour looks very exposed if France does not surrender.
Germany takes the Hague.
French and British air offensives knock some BRP of Germany and damage her tac.
Bulgaria fails to wipe out the Varna beach-head.
Finns knock out a Russian reduced 1-3 inf.
Tunisian 3-3 flipped for supply. Russia rebuilds the 1-3 inf in Varna. French public opinion holds up and she doesn’t ask for surrender terms.
Germany 194, Italy 109, Britain 128, France 67, USSR 123.
No mud. Great Polish rally chit will put an extra infantry corps in the UK and USSR force pools.
Swedes and Romanians forget to build. Germany completes her panzers.France rebuilt 2x2-3 inf in St Nazaire. Italy bought her SAC as I was feeling rich. I bought 2 attritions and Est HQ offensives, desperately hoping to get one before my arm in France were killed out of supply.
Italy bribes Turkey. Romania and Spain wooed by both sides. Bulgaria declares on Russia. Yugoslavia declares on Italy. I felt quite stretched at this point.
Sea zone placement
French and British in the North sea and western approaches. Italy and Britain in the western me. Italy on her own in the central med.
Declarations of war
Russia declares on France. Germany on Luxembourg. Britain still seems to be waiting for Italy to declare on her.
Italy raids French shipping in the Med.
German U-boats slipped into the North Atlantic to attack Britain’s convoys.
Italy lines the Yugoslav front. This leaves Rome exposed but I figure I have enough subs in sea control to cut up the landing craft. Again this was not necessary as Yugoslav units cantenter Italy. I also reinforced the supply line to my cut off armour but it 's still out on a limb.
Britain pulls the 3 inf and 2 arm from the south of France back to the UK, again using our neutrality. These troops have only been in France one turn. What a relief, Italy’s armour looks much safer.
Russia reinforces Varna with a tank corps.
US BRP to UK.
Italy fails to take Tunis with the inf from Libya.
British arm withdraws leaving a gap in the Maginot line South of Sedan. If only the French and British could coordinate he could have plugged the gap.
Russia takes Helsinki, Oslo, Damascus, Amman and Jerusalem. She made to attack Romania but was told off by Germany. It seems there is a secret pact between Jon and James. If they do go to war Norway costs Germany 10 BRP in winter turns. Just typing Damascus and Jerusalem gives me the shivers, it must be a hangover from reading the bible.
Germany piled through the gap in the Maginot line, taking Paris and Sedan. It puts Italy to shame, as my best shot would likely bounce off Paris without leaving a mark yet Germany takes it with barely a thought.
Italy takes Lyons, my TAC landed in Bordeaux and my SAC shifted to the Hague. I forgot about the 2 panzer corps left to my control so they sat twiddling their thumbs for 3 months.
Italian arm from Algiers finally takes Tunis supported by SAC in mainland Italy.
British and French air efforts maul German TAC.
French GHQ offensive fizzles as the HQ had already died.
Tunisia surrenders to Italy. Finland, Norway, Syria, Jordan and Palestine surrender to Russia. France asks for terms, Germany demands unconditional surrender but is refused.
Mass strikes chit cost France 15 BRP.
Germany rebuilds TAC losses.
Russia scraps LC and rebuilds it in Leningrad. She also scrapped some surf to afford her offensive.
Romania wooed by both sides. Turkey bribed by Italy.
Sea Zone placement
British and French to North sea, British and Italians to Western approaches. British to Eastern Atlantic, Italy and Britain to Western Med. Italy also to Central med and Aegean.
Declarations of war
Britain declares on Italy.Russia declares on Hungary, I'm not sure why, perhaps because Romania was part of the secret Russo-German pact between players and he needed someone to conquer?
Contested in the Western approaches though the Royal Navy inflicted more damage on the Italians than she took and sank 3 sub. Royal Navy withdraws from Western Med because of the loss of his TAC and CV. I am again impressed by how important TAC are to sea control. Britain rerouted her Mediterranean convoys. British shipping raided by German and Italian subs.
Russia withdraws all but a single 3-5 tank corps from the middle east. He sent them to Eastern Poland. Is this a sign that Russia expects an attack from Germany or was Egypt in Germany’s sphere of interest?
UK withdraws TAC, arm, inf and HQ from Egypt but left the surf in Alexandria. Never have I seen such cowardice from the British Empire.Come back here and fight. Maybe Churchill has turned yellow. We forgot the cost was doubled for going round the Horn of Africa and only one could go on the Egyptian railway. I think he should have fallen back to Suez and let the Russians and Italians try and take him out, neither of us have enough force present at that moment.
Italy begins shifting weak ground troops from France to the Yugoslav front.
Italy gifts Rhodes to Turkey, bringing her into alliance. This is quite a threat to the Russians in Bulgaria and Palestine if we go to war. Then I shifted Turkish BRP to me.
US BRP to Britain.
Italy walked into Casablanca.
Italy lands in Alexandria chewing up the Royal Navy squadron stationed there. I realise too late that the 2CV paid for 3 seasons ago and only just launched are still swinging at anchor in Genoa.
Germany mops up some of the French.
Helsinki falls. Stockholm attacked by the tank corps from Oslo and an amphibious landing but holds out.
Swedes destroy a cavalry corps on the coast of the northern tip of the Baltic. This was quite easy as the Russians were down to zero BRP.
Egypt and French Morocco surrender to Italy. At last the Italian Navy can pass the Pillars of Hercules. France accepts unconditional surrender. I think peace with honour would have been better as the fleet goes over to Free France straight away and all the colonies are already taken, I’m also a little peeved as I did half the work in France but get none of the booty. BRP Italy 16, Germany 35, Britain 31 and Russia 0.
It was 4am when we stopped. I had lost the will to watch the others move and was constantly rubbing my eyes or yawning.
Russia has done much better than historically so I guess he's not as deranged as I thought. James admits he had a pact with Germany not to attack each other until they had expanded as much as possible at the expense of minors. The defeat of France was to be left till later but the Italians were making good progress against her so Germany decided to finish the job. Eventually Russia and Germany were to attack each once their war economies were swollen by many conquests. Britain has been attacked by all 3 of the other major powers but seems very well garrisoned behind the channel. The axis are up by Turkey, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisa but down by Norway. What should become the allies are down by Egypt but up by Norway and Finland. Overall I figure the axis are up by territories worth 34 BRP 24 more than the allies who are up by territories worth 10 BRP.
Looking at the effect of the variants, Spain may yet be a thorn in the axis side if she later allies with the UK as seems likey but 25 BRP to Italy each year is worth it. Waffling Belgium and Extended Maginot have been negated but they allowed Greece and Yugoslavia to survive till now. Extended offensives has yet to have any effect. Between them all the 4 variants have added spice to the game without unbalancing it.

I never really needed the sustained offensive in the turns we played. Hopefully i'll need it when the russian invasion begins...Sorry for taking France away from you but the gap appeared so I had to race to Paris. If you like i'll give you half of the BRP's I receive from France as an unofficial prize if you like? I'm wondering if Barbarossa should start early (even though I agreed with James to not start it until summer '41) while russia is so stretched already and can't possibly prevent an axis invasion.
Still waiting for my deluxe map though!
I wouldn't feel right taking what you earnt, I would have bounced as high as the Eiffel tower trying to take Paris. Actually I've done alright from her colonies.
I was thinking you might try for the UK as one of my TACs is on the Western approaches and my landing craft in Messina can reach Belfast this Fall. You have 3 instant SRs from French collapse to get your TAC and Panzers to the coast where you can build your LC.
I cant afford to declare war on the USSR and carry out an offensive but I could tag along with yours. You can build in East Prussia but your panzers will take a season to rail over to the East and by then its Winter. Romania Sweden and Bulgaria can enjoy 2 free rounds of attrition attacks as he has no BRP for offensives.
I had an inkling you'd made a pact with James when he stepped back from Romania.
