Hurray, it's finally time for the Unboxed Awards. A series of awards which is based on the best new playing experiences of the year by an esteemed panel of celebrity judges and then voted on by you, the very discerning and intelligent, general public.

The Panel includes:

Mark Rivera from Board Games in Blighty
Kevin Schlabach from Seize Your Turn
Paco Jaen from G*M*S Magazine
Paul Lister from Board Game Guru
Michael Fox from the Little Metal Dog Show
Rob Harris from Playtest
and...
Me... from Unboxed

The Rules for nominating a game were simple:

d10-1 The Game must be in Print
d10-2 The Game had to be one bought or played for the first time this year.

Finally, a small note on logistics... Now those of you who are good at maths may notice that there are only 7 panel members and in some categories there are more or less than 7 nominations. I can explain this… They cheated!

No, in all honesty, in some categories the same game got nominated multiple times, in others people were torn between two games so I included both.

Right lets get to the polls... Don't forget if you really want your choice to win you can vote a second time by visiting Unboxed or any of the contributors who are hosting the polls!

Definitely some curious choices there. I like Descent for value game. Isn't Gambit 7 too close to Wits and Wagers?

An odd list for sure. The best 2 player game of the year was Innovation and its not on there but pandemic which isn't new this year is on there. I guess I'm missing how this list was generated. Was this just a list of games this particular group played (ie..was new to them?)

Each member of the panel voted on one game for each category which then generated the lists. If one particular game was not voted for in that category then it doesn't appear. The contributors were asked to pick the games they played for the first time this year that best represented the category.

I'd like to see game awards that ONLY include games for the past year (I'm looking at you too BGG). Otherwise, whats the point?

Well, almost everyone on the panel is a reviewer but not all of us get review copies, so buying a significant number of games released each year is very difficult! And if you haven't played it you can't suggest it is the "Best"!

In addition a lot of games take time from release to reach different countries or to be released after being demoed at a convention. In which case do you count the release date as the day the game premiers regardless of whether it's on general release worldwide?

Under my system the games chosen were all played for the first time by the contributors in the last year. This seemed to make more sense to me. However, most of the games in the lists are generally from the last three years, which I think, in most peoples book, is still perfectly relevant!

However, if the result are of no interest to you feel free to ignore them!

Re: Vote on the Unboxed Awards - Results
So, one month of voting, over 100 votes in each category and finally, we have our winners.

So, let’s recap. I hand picked a group of very talented contributors, I asked them to choose a game they played this year which best suited the category. Their choices were then offered to you, the very discerning general public, to vote upon and choose Your Favourite of Our Favourites.

And so I can now reveal the Results:

Best Expansion

Winner: Dominion Prosperity (21 Votes)
Second Place: Carcassonne Traders and Builders (17 Votes)
Runners Up – Agricola: Farmers of the Moor, Dominion Intrigue, Space Alert: The New Frontier, Thunderstone: Wrath of the Elements, Talisman Reaper and Battlestar Pegasus

Best Small Box Game

Winner: Hive (38 Votes)

Second Place: Red November (15 Votes)
Mr Jack Pocket, Parade, Chrononauts, The Bottle Imp, Dos de Mayo and Habermus Pape

Best 2 Player Game

Winner: Pandemic (21 Votes)

Second Place: Summoner Wars and Battleline (16 Votes Each)
Warhammer: Invasion, Campaign Manager 2008, Mijinlieff, Dos de Mayo, Mali Powstancy and Fire of Midway

Best Value Game

Winner: Forbidden Island (34 Votes)

Second Place: Carcassonne (21 Votes)
Smallworld, Battlestar Galactica, Thunderstone and Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Best Family Game

Winner: Zooloretto (26 Votes)

Second Place: Forbidden Island (21 Votes)
The Adventurers, Junkyard Races, Ingenious, Survive: Escape from Atlantis, Castle Ravenloft and K2

Most Innovative Game

Winner: Battlestar Galactica (22 Votes)

Second Place: Tobago (16 Votes)
Power Grid, Innovation, The Adventurers, Troyes, and Totemo

Best Party Game

Winner: Dixit (48 Votes)

Second Place: Wits and Wagers (20 Votes)
Are You A Werewolf, Arrrrrrghtect and Gambit 7

Best Components and/or Artwork

Winner: Dixit (20 Votes)

Second Place: Stone Age and Space Hulk 3rd Edition (18 Votes Each)
Tobago, The Adventurers, Cosmic Encounter, War of the Roses and Forbidden Island

Best Euro Game

Winner: Stone Age (33 Votes)

Second Place: Dominant Species (21 Votes)
Kingsburg, Automobile and Endeavor

Best Retheme or Reprint

Winner: Survive: Escape from Atlantis (27 Votes)

Second Place: Brief History of the World (13 Votes)
Dungeonquest, Inca Empire and Colossal Arena

Game of the Year

Winner: Dominion (25 Votes)

Second Place: Cosmic Encounter (17 Votes)
Runners Up: Dixit, Battlestar Galactica, Dominant Species and Forbidden Island

So, despite my shameless attempt to boost Cosmic Encounters votes by reviewing the game and begging for votes, Dominion still won out. As I said in my review Cosmic was my nomination for Game of the Year, but the general public has spoken and of all our contributors picks Dominion stands tall.

Of course, now comes the really important part, the scores. Each contributor scored 3 points for a 1st place and 1 point for each 2nd place:

Unboxed (Me): 15 points
Board Games in Blighty (Mark Rivera) 5 points
Little Metal Dog (Michael Fox) 11 points
Seize Your Turn (Kevin Schlabach) 14 Points plus the Game of the Year Nominator Badge
G*M*S Magazine (Paco Jean) 4 Points
Board Game Guru (Paul Lister) 6 Points
Playtest (Rob Harris) 4 points

Well, draw what conclusions you will from that, but I’d say that I win!!!

Thanks again to absolutely everyone who contributed either by nominating games or voting in the polls. Hopefully these results will be of some use to someone, if not, it was a lot of fun putting it all together anyway.

Until next year! Have fun gaming!
