It is really surprising to see that the entire Map and its physical features could be wiped out without affecting the game mechanics. Except for the resources and the production of a space, its geography do not matter nor for movement nor for combat. Water is a bit significant but many times there are only scattered lakes without helpful waterways. We applied 2 simple mod rules and it did enhance our play.
1- Mountain spaces cost 2 moves to enter.
2- When you move from 1 water space to another water space, you can also move diagonally.
Not anymore all the spaces are highways between cities. Water spaces are now connected with diagonal movement, thus creating extended fast waterways being now more realistic and enhancing water movement. Cities can now be shielded within mountains and more reachable through water as it was the case in real life. The slowest movement within mountains is balanced by the fastest movement within water.
It’s a matter of taste and realism...
I like it. Nice and simple.
