What is the most points people have gotten in placing one family member (as far as difference in overall score before and after). My best is 14 points which I got with renovate/fences on the final round. First I renovated my 6 room clay house to stone (6 points) then I built a square of 8 fences to create a pasture of 4 spaces (4 points for empty spaces that are no longer empty + 2 points because this was my first pasture). Finally, because of a minor improvement I played the turn before (something from the I-deck, I forget the name) I got 2 free sheep to put in the pasture. Because I didnt have sheep before this, that's another 2 points, for a grand total of 6+4+2+2=14.

Wouldn't that be 22?

Renovate 6 rooms to stone: +6
Fence 4 pastures: +5
...that cover 6 spaces: +6
Half-Timbered House grants +1 point per stone room: +6

That leads me to wonder: what's the largest point sway that can be accomplished with just one family member's action?

It kinda has to be a big renovate + fences, doesn't it?

There should be a Word Games Subdomain, or at least a Word Games Forum!

Fencing 4 pastures gives 5 points - from -1 to +4.

If you had the Conservator, you could get an additional 6 points with that action, going from wood hut to stone house directly. That would be 29 points.

The biggest possible point swing from one action is probably in the neighborhood of 100.

Imagine you have the following cards in play:

Conservator
Chief
Mason
Yeoman Farmer
Chief's Daughter
Braggart
Merchant

Mansion
Clogs
5 more improvements

Further imagine that you have a 14-room Wooden Hut, 18 stone, 9 clay and 8 reed. Expand your mental image to include your opponents, who have played Constable, House Steward and Village Elder, and have a 15 room house and 1 more improvement than you.

Renovate + Basketmaker's Workshop + Pottery

Score
1 for filling the space with Mason
30 for Renovation
30 for Mansion
15 for Chief
5 for Basketmaker's Workshop
5 for Pottery
5 for Constable
3 for Chief's Daughter
3 for Village Elder
3 for House Steward
2 for Clogs
4 for Braggart

106 total?
5

That's one hell of an imagination you'd need.

Sure, a 15-room stone house scores a ton of points. But I always wondered: how does the family feed itself? In the 14th round, the family is recognized as the most exceptional in the land. But after the 14th round, the family likely has to charge admission to visitors who come to see their mansion to avoid starvation!

My opponent scored 22 points in the game detailed in this session report.

Renovate/fences in the optimal layout for 8 spaces used plus 4 for three pastures, 4 for renovating a 4-room house, and 6 for an already played Chief and Chief's Daughter.

Yes, he won, but by only one point; the problem with laying down all your fences on the last turn is that it usually implies you don't have any animals.
