I just picked up a copy of Thunderstone after following it in BGG since the beginning of the year. I'm particularly interested in the solo version which has received good reviews. Here's my first pass through the Solo Normal game.

Solo Thunderstone - Normal Mode

Oh crap, this does not look good; I have nothing at this point in the game that can stop any of these.

Turn: 11
Knightmare || Darkness || Knightmare ||
Gold: 4 Light: 1 Attack: 3 Results: Buy Warhammer --> Level up Militia to Chalice Quester
Additional Events: Knightmare ransacks the village

Turn: 12
Darkness || Knightmare || Darkness ||

Another Darkness? Buying cards is my only real option.

Additional Events: Knightmare ransacks the village

Could have used some light here. Four escapees in a row!

Finally killed something!

Turn: 16
Judgement || Griknack Goblin || Lord Mortis ||
Gold: 6 Light: 3 Attack: 8 Results: Kill Judgement
Additional Events: Monsters don't advance due to the previous victory.

I was fortunate to be able to go so deep in the dungeon to kill Judgement. The Lightstone Gem helped.

Turn: 17
Grayskin Lizard || Griknack Goblin || Lord Mortis ||
Gold: 10 Light: 4 Attack: 0 Results: Buy Chalice Quester

Two kills in a row, then none of my soldiers show up!

Once again stuck with low attack cards.

Additional Events: Revenant ransacks the village

Those Revenant are tough.

Turn: 40
Haunt || Haunt || The Prince ||
Gold: 7 Light: 0 Attack: 11 Results: Kill Haunt at Rank 2

Turn: 41
Thunderstone || Haunt || The Prince ||
Gold: 9 Light: 0 Attack: 11 Results: Kill Haunt and take Thunderstone; Game ends.

Player VP:52 (48 without 3 VP for Thunderstone)
Dungeon VP: 41

Player Win.

Key strategy was to use Chalice Fighters + Warhammers + Feast. Could have probably rested a few times and dumped the daggers and torches.

How do you figure the last part? If Prince is still in Rank 1, TS doesn't go to Rank 1 to so you can't claim it. You need to kill the monster in Rank 1 to move TS to Rank 1 to claim it (and end game).

The rules for solo play state there are two end game conditions:

The game ends when the Thunderstone reaches the front rank. If the player defeats the monster in front of the Thunderstone, the player receives the Thunderstone and the game ends immediately.

I interpreted that I triggered the second condition.

It's not two end conditions, second sentence clarifies whether or you receive the TS (and its VP).

Wrath of the Elements rules put it like this:

"The game ends when the Thunderstone reaches Rank 1, as
usual.
If you defeat the Monster in front of the Thunderstone,
you are able to collect it and add it to your score." (p. 17)

(emphasis mine)

As to the session, I would've tried get as many Flaming Swords (+3 MA and +1 Light) and Selurin as possible to go with the Chalices. Selurins from level 2 onward are just stupid powerful, gets even worse when you have Flaming Swords adding +3MA (which gets doubled or quadrupled or more yuk ).

The game itself isn't important. Spending time intellectually jousting with likeminded folks is the real reason to game.

Wow, this explains why I've had such trouble beating it even on Normal in Solo mode.

I was not playing that the monsters didn't advance on the next turn after beating a monster. I was playing that they just didn't advance on the same turn as beating a monster.

I actually managed to win something like once out of twelve times, when I used weak enemies and managed to buy two or three early Fireballs.

That's Nightmare difficulty (though you halve the Village decks for that as well) laugh .

Thanks for the clarification.

Assuming I could not beat The Prince and therefore lost it to the village, that would have been an eight point swing and my result should have been:

Player VP: 44
Dungeon VP: 49
Player Loss.

I played a second time with the Selurins as the main heroes and found them to be, as you said, stupid powerful.

Yeah, I think I've used them once in a solo session and never in 2-player, always doing a mulligan for its randomiser.

What happens if the Thunderstone is in Rank 3 and you defeat the monster in Rank 2? Do you collect the Thunderstone or not? In other words, is the only way to receive the Thunderstone to defeat the monster in Rank 1 while the Thunderstone is in Rank 2?

TS moves to Rank 2, you refill a monster to Rank 3, just like in a normal game. And yes, I think even with all the Dungeon manipulators (which can't be used in solo most of them), killing Rank 1 monster with TS in Rank 2 is the only way to claim it.
