I just played a two player game and it worked really well. The dummy player allows for tactical and strategic decisions, as well as screw your neighbor. I do have two questions:

1. Do you score the dummy player's cards for Guild purposes?

2. Do you battle the dummy player as well as the other live player?

I think the answer to both questions is YES. Anyone disagree? This element also adds to strategy because you have to be careful about what you dump there and you can use it to your advantage. In my game, my wife beat me because she built up a military and won every conflict against both me and the dummy. I guess we know who the real dummy was!

I like to have a 2 player variant, where it's a little bit harder to beat the "third player", so I don't like the original variant very much.
