Why do people always try to fix something that isn't broke.
I haven't played with any of the alternative bidding rules, but I have thought several times during my sessions that the seating order has direct influence over the results.
I won't call it broken, but I do believe there is a general consensus that the current bidding rules are suboptimal in a competitive setting, and definitively less involved than most other Wallace designs. (Without trying to start a discussion about who designed which aspects of this game.)
Therefore, I find it perfectly acceptable that people used to more advanced turn bidding rules (and don't mind the slightly increased play time) can make up other bidding rules in order to create a fairer game.
