you could use a different map simply changing the "names" of the regions and the borders only aesthetically (i.e. so that the 4/2/0 region is touching the 6/4/2 and the 5/3/1, etc.).
Alternatively, you would have to carefully balance the value and postion of the regions to keep the game as well balanced as it is.

Note: the "theme" of El Grande is very thin; the map could have been painted to represent any place. Play it.

Sonja (#461766), don't get bog down by the Spain factor. It is one of the great Euro Games. I'd say it's more like a medieval political game. See it that way.

I just posted one to the files section you might like better
It should be able to handle a bit of a size increase before printing if you like. Working on cards for it now which should go with the theme.
