My wife and I recently played Civilization and were very impressed with how the combat system there worked. If you're not familiar, read up, but basically you take turns in the combat where you either attack an existing front or create a new front.

What I'm thinking for AoM is this:

On your turn, if you have unallocated miniatures, you must either:
1. Create a new front.
2. Attack an existing front. (Battle continues until one or the other is dead.)
3. Retreat (ending the battle).

If, on your turn, you have no remaining allocated miniatures, you must either:
1. Pick up a miniature and attack an existing front.
2. Retreat (ending the battle).

The idea is basically instead of having combat be a "guess what I might play next" affair, instead it becomes somewhat tactical. At least that's my thought.

What do you guys think about this?

In this game tactics do exist. Guessing is a large part of it, but simply making a rule that you can't use the same unit 2 combat rounds in a row helps with that.
