All reality is a game. Physics at its most fundamental, the very fabric of our universe, results directly from the interaction of certain fairly simple rules, and chance... (Iain Banks)

Hi Robert-
Mythos is a brilliant game, and worth the effort. It isn't clear which set of rules you are using, or even which cards. The "best" rules IMO are post on the Chaosium site at
http://www.chaosium.com/mythos/rules/rulesbook.shtml

Try to locate a copy of The Art of Playing Mythos (ISBN 1-56882-061-5). This is the best introduction you will get without someone to teach you.

Once you start playing, HouseofTindalos is pretty helpful, especially the advanced hints at http://www.houseoftindalos.net/contents/playtoc.html

I don't like the "Standard Edition" because two player Mythos encourages head-to-head play at the expense of investigation-based play (that focuses on completing stories and accumulating points). The game shines with four players. Hence my recommendation for the online rulesabove.

Good luck,

-R

Some helpful basic gameplay tips:

In most cases, running through your deck will get the required cards into play (or into your story deck) quicker.

Watch your hand size - strategic passing can force players to discard useful cards from their hand.

Keep in mind that cards that remain in play are ready to be used to resolve your next adventure.

Things that can play together (joined monsters and tomes/artifacts with spells) are generally more effective when played together (multiple cards played in one turn action), but you may play the tome/artifact first, and then add the spell later.

Next up a bit of deck building

If possible, try to get several of the "original" investigator cards. Your deck can be tuned for specific investigators (they may already read a useful language, for instance).

Agreed with all of the above, and Mythos is a FANTASTIC GAME! Enjoy your experience and try out lotsa different stuff; its an adventure!

I like group games much more than any "duel" format. Makes for some dicey passing, though!

Get everything you can - you'll be happy you did. The rares really are hard to get hold of If you want to play the game you will need to create several decks. For those decks to balance you need equitable card distribution, and that requires a lot of cards to select from.
The really useful cards are not all rares, by the way, but there are several which are: Yithian Mental Contact is top of the list, but you will soon find several others.
