We love TI3, but it takes too long to play.

Are there games that are similar but shorter?

Specifically what elements of TI3 do you most enjoy?
-particular mechanics?
-space opera/sci-fi setting?
-unique player victory conditions?
-diplomacy, politics & negotiation?
-bits & chrome?
-etc.

Play Runewars with your TI:3 pieces?

Okay, I was joking a little bit, but now I'm wondering if that's actually possible! Anyone tried?

I agree with Arthur. I've play Galactic Emperor, but not TI:3. GE is a great game with multiple victory paths.

Galactic Emperor came to my mind as well as soon as I saw this thread.

You don't get unique races, but you do get a lot of the other aspects of TI3 in a MUCH shorter timespan.

The space opera/sci-fi setting we enjoy alot.
What we find with TI3 is that although the game is long, by the time it's about to end you don't feel you've really accomplished much.

Combat is sparse and everybody seems to just build up their fleet and mind their own business.

TI3 also feels short on the politics, negotiation aspect.

I hear that the expansion improves on these aspects a lot?

Nexus Ops is not really what we are looking for, we do have the game.

we want more of the empire building, space opera feel of TI3

There are some fan-made variants involving race abilities and technologies that look quite interesting:

I'm not a huge space theme game fan but I really was surprised by Ad Astra. It played well and quickly, and the theme wasn't too terribly pasted on.

The game itself isn't important. Spending time intellectually jousting with likeminded folks is the real reason to game.
