War at Sea Game Recap

War at Sea is a quick playing game for two players. The Allied player has the burden of moving first and setting the pace by determining which areas they want to contest with the Germans. On turn 1, the British can not guard all 5 sea areas so will have to leave 1 area open or unacceptably weak.

A good British strategy is to try and force the Germans fleet to come out each turn to fight and take irreplaceable casualties. The German fleet is brittle and outnumbered by the British, which can afford even unfavorable attrition. Even losing 2 British ships to every German ship is good for the British

The most common strategy for the British is the Barents on 1 where all four Northern areas are challenged on turn 1 and the Mediterranean is usually abandoned for the duration of the game.

Because the Allied side is favored, most players will bid extra POC for the privilege of playing the Allied side. Most bids are in the range of 0.5 to 2.0 POC for the Allies. In this game, the Allies have bid 1.5 POC and will have to win the game by at least 2 POC.

Turn 1
The British attempt a Barents on 1 strategy, where all four of the Northern Sea areas are occupied by British ships, leaving the Mediterranean to the Italians for the duration of the game.

1-0-* U-boat

Immediately bad luck strikes the British as the 2 British battlecruisers fail their speed rolls on a pair of 6’s. On turn 1, unless this happens, the Axis usually head for the North Atlantic or the South Atlantic with the surface fleet and send the U-boats to the Baltic. In the Med, the Italians split their fleet between Italy and the Mediterranean to minimize the impact of the Allied LBA. Placing half of each ship type in the Med and Italy doesn’t let the Allies target more than 2 Italian cruisers or weak battleships in a single turn.

In this case, the entire German fleet challenges the British Barents patrol and wins the battle, sinking 3 British cruisers with no losses or permanent damage to their own. Airpower was decisive in this battle as the Brits disabled both the Scharnhorst and the Gneisenau, but had the Hood disabled by Axis air as well. After round 1, 2 British cruisers retreat with the Ark Royal and are not pursued by the Axis, who had 1 CA capable of pursuit.

The loss of 3 cruisers for the British is not necessarily devastating, but the survival of the carrier is a big plus.

Score +1 Axis (Axis control Barents+Med – Allied control of North Sea, North and South Atlantic)

Turn 2
The Brits again go for all four Northern areas, and the Axis fleet again heads to the Barents.

The Luftwaffe disables the Repulse, but the British carriers are more decisive by disabling the Bismarck and Scharnhorst forcing them back to port before the surface battle. The Allies sink the Gneisenau, Admiral Hipper, and all 3 German pocket battleships, while losing the Hood and 2 cruisers. Though the Germans win this battle, their fleet is seriously damaged. More fatal though is letting the British carriers escape. Only 1 German cruiser was left to pursue the 2 fleeing British carriers, which split up their retreat, assuring the survival of at least 1 carrier. The pursuing Prinz Eugen could only manage a disable against the pursued Ark Royal, the most valuable carrier.

Cumulative Score +2 Axis (Axis control Barents+Med – Allied control of North Sea, North and South Atlantic)

Turn 3
Aid to the British cause comes with a convoy and 1 Russian ship. The Germans play it safe and send their depleted fleet to the Baltic where they dispatch the Okt Revolution but not before she sinks the Scharnhorst. German U-boats go to the South Atlantic, where ASW is the weakest and sink the Eagle.
Score +2 Axis

Turn 4
The British hold back Convoy 2B and send Convoy 1A to the Barents.
The Luftwaffe sink the Ark Royal, while the RAF sinks the Zara. German U-boats in the North Atlantic and South Atlantic break control. Convoy 1A lands in Russia and evens the score.
Score +0

Turn 5
The Formidable and Renown are sunk by the Luftwaffe while the RAF sinks the Gorizia. Convoy 2B is hit for 3 damage, by the U-boats but survives and continues to the Barents
Score +0

Turn 6
The U-boats go to the Barents, and 3 are sunk, 3 are disabled, but 1 survives breaking control for the Germans. Convoy 2B is disabled back to the US, while Convoy 3C moves to the Barents.
Score +0

Turn 7
The Germans send the Graf Zeppelin into the North Atlantic and the U-boats to the Barents. The British sink 2 U-boats and disable the rest, but the Luftwaffe sinks Convoy 3C. The Graf Zeppelin’s air strike sinks the Wichita, but the Graf Zeppelin is sunk by the combined Allied fire. Convoy 2B lands in Britain, as it is not willing to brave the Barents in a maximum damaged state. The British control all 4 northern sea areas to the Axis control of the Baltic and the Med.
Score +2 Allied

Turn 8
The Allies occupy the 4 Northern sea areas as the Axis fleet sorties for a last hurrah. Calculating that it would be improbable to break control of 2 sea areas with the depleted U-boat force, the Axis send the U-boats and their fleet to the North Sea hoping to score a decisive result against the Allies. 2 U-boats survive ASW but fail to attrit the British fleet.

After the first round of Allied surface fire, the Axis concede as only the damaged Blucher would survive to round 2 and would face at least 3 British BB’s
