I am considering buying a copy of Samurai Swords that has one sword missing.

So is the game playable as such ? If not, can anyone suggest a tweak to possibly make the game playable ?

Thanks very much in advance.

Aren't the swords to show turn order, which you can bid for if you wish? Think it would mainly be an aesthetic issue of one player with a dice/card showing his position. Guess it depends how much cheaper it is because of that and how badly you want it.

The swords are used as markers for turn order. I'd simply suggest making and/or using a substitute when playing with all five players. Otherwise note which one is missing and just skip it will fewer players.

You don't just bid for swords. Some players don't bid or there is a tie in bidding. In these cases you draw the sword from a closed fist (on the first turn there is no bid).

I'm not saying you can't play the game without the sword but you may have to implement a way other than sword draws to determine random turn order. That is easily done just wanted to clarify the issue.

There is a road, no simple highway, between the dawn and the dark of night, and if you go no one may follow, that path is for your steps alone. Ripple in still water, when there is no pebble tossed, nor wind to blow.

To seek the sacred river Alph, to walk the caves of ice, to break my fast on honey dew and drink the milk of paradise... I had heard the whispered tales of immortality, the deepest mystery, from an ancient book I took a clue.

A friend of mine purchased a copy with two swords missing. What we did was to buy 3 sets of hashi (chop sticks) that were identical and carefully glued little gems on them to make the 1-5. We also discussed carving the symbols in but since he bought such nice sets of hashi he didn't want to ruin them. We bought the tiny gems from a Joann Fabrics.

You don't have to use hashi, but it does maintain the Japanese style of the game and is easy to buy identical sets that are artistically done. The ones my friend purchased were black lacquered with cranes on them.

Hope this helps out in your situation!

So can I just use five counters, marked 1-5, and draw them from a cup ?

Certainly. Not as thematic but it would work.

There must have been a moment at the beginning, where we could have said no. Somehow we missed it. Well, we'll know better next time.

It looks like 26 people have parts for trade and some of them explicitly state they have extra swords:
