We played our first game (2 players) yesterday and it was fun. But I'm still not 100% confident over the exact sequence when issuing a press release and participating in the Fair. This is how we played it. Can you confirm it was ok?

When doing press release:

1- Choose a wine and determine its value (adding cubes if wanted)
2- On your playmat choose the right Wine Expert counter (# of experts you can play during the next contest)
3- Put it in one of the Fair space, earning the bonus immediately
4- Score the 2 features immediately on the Fair track, without using experts
5- According to requests, put 1 or 2 barrels on the VIPs
6- Discard the wine

Now, when the next fair occurs, those who have not yet announced their wine must do so. Then:

Every player, including those who have announced their wine in advance:

- Can play expert tiles (eventually adding to the value of the features)
- Score the features once for every Expert tile they played

This where I had a doubt: it seems like the players who did a press release will score 2 features an extra time: once during step 4 and again (maybe several times) during the Fair. Is this how it is supposed to be? Isn't it too powerful?

Players who haven't sent their wine yet will pass through all those 1-6 steps before the actual fair happen. What press release does is allowing to do that earlier. (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/59669/item/1466688#ite... In player order, all players that didn't present a wine to the fair, using the Press Release action, must do so now.)

Doing it earlier has its pros and cons.
Pros: You can send the wine to the fair in a year where you'll satisfy more specialists (A/B/C), or the ones you want to satisfy (and who doesn't want to satisfy Constantino? (a recurrent joke on our games)).
You'll be getting the "best" place at the fair before others.

Cons: Say that you pick press release on the second year. On the third there will still be some adjustments on the characteristics (with the weather tile), which you don't know at this moment and might have played diferently. Say that you've picked a place focused on taste and that on the third year the taste characteristic improves. You've lost some points there...

The other advantage in having the press release earlier is to have actions available to you when you have managers you can use. If you wait until the fair, when someone else performed a press release the previous year, they'll have had at least two more action phases in which to use the managers for bonus actions.

And another advantage is obviously getting in front on the turn order.

Ok, I get the pros and cons now, but my sequence was correct as described, right?

The sequence was correct, but it seems you are forgetting that if the fair arrives, anyone who hasn't sent their wine, will, therefore passing by all those steps (and getting their fair points). Unless I misunderstood you.

Perhaps it helps matters if you see the Fair as two different steps which may be performed at different times:

1. Anything related to actually putting down the wine expert marker;
2. The rest (blind bid, moving characteristics if necessary, scoring extra fair points based on the bid, awarding VP for position on the fair score track, adjusting player order).

The press release action is just step 1 in this process. Players may chose to perform it as an action and thus for example profit from the help of a manager and a change in turn order; or they are forced to perform step 1 when the fair is actually held, and then cannot rely on the help of a manager or change the turn order as they are not taking step 1 as an action now.

Once everyone has performed step 1 (recognisable by having put down a wine expert marker), step 2 begins. Players may not perform step 1 multiple times before a step 2.

Right, but all players have the opportunity of doing the press release before the fair starts, even without the use of the action. The cons are they will not be able to take an extra action immediately and, they don't adjust the turn order.

edit - (ops, my answer arrived a few minutes later).
Thank you all for the correct responses.

Actually, I knew there was a mandatory announcement before the fair. I just wanted to focus on the extra characteristic scoring. Edited original post to reflect that.

Yes, you score the features when send the wine, and then again with the experts play during the competition. Just don't forget that you can only play experts related with the chosen features.

Ah! Got it! Even when forced to announce just before a fair, every player will score the characteristics once when putting their Fair counter on the bonus space and will score again after all Experts have been played. Right?

Yes... He passes through all those steps before the actual fair resolution.
