Car wars was always a slower paced game by comparison to modern day gaming, so getting it to hit the table with modern day board gamers has been hard, especially when my after work gaming time isn't long enough for much but a tiny duel.

So I am now looking for, and if I can't find, proposing to host a play by forum / e-mail game. Thought I would check on the 'geek as well as the SJG forums, as these seem to have the most active communities.

If I can get enough interest, and can't find anyone else running games, I propose a quick "Killer Kart" duel, something that can accommodate many players and be quick and brutal, but equally prove the play-by-forum format can work for players and moderators alike.

As a template I'd look to use the 2.5ed rules, with some of the small "fixes" that Jeffr0 suggests on a blog post (http://jeffro.wordpress.com/2009/10/21/wayne-hertz-takes-arm...).

But for now, like I say, is anyone already doing this ? Or tried it and have any war stories to tell ?!

Ben,

It has been done in the past.

Jimmy Logan used to run them, but it does not seem any are active right now. You can contact him through

http://web.me.com/jimmylogan/madhat/Home.html

and I am sure he would give advice.

The guys I used to play regularly with in Philly, also used to host some PBEM duels.

http://cwhnj.com/tsarnj/tsar_frame.htm

I do not believe any are currently active, but they were considering starting one around 6 months ago. Again, I am sure they would be happy to give you advice/tips.

Eric

Ah yeah, Jimmy Logan ! I've got his Madhat vehicle design spreadsheet - a work of beauty, and listened to some of the podcasts. To the best of my knowledge, he moved from PBEM to DarkWind, which was my solution for a little while, but I guess I'm a boardgamer more than a computer gamer at heart !

Think I cruised through those sites, and several dozen similar ones, whilst looking for an "active" group. It's good to hear people were at least playing within the last year or so. Now just a case of seeing if the games are still active, or if I can find enough players scattered across the 'net to put together a few duels myself ?!

Thanks for the assist Eric (and my, what a lot of supporter badges you have !)

Most of those links look familiar (and quite old) ! A couple of new ones though, many thanks.

Have reached out to the NADA Yahoo group as well (it shows a small pulse...) to see what's occuring over there. The SJG forum (and this forum) still seem like the two with any regular activity, so probably the best recruiting groups for a Play-By-Forum bout.

Looking more than likely that hosting something new is going to be the outcome (if any) too, as current games seem to have dried up. Any player interest out there ?!

I miss autoduelling cool

It's been ages since I played but consider me interested. My lack of play has always been due to lack of opponents and/or time. A pbem/pbf seems a perfect fit. If the pace is expected to be a move a day, I should have no problem keeping up.

I subscribed to this thread but you can also geekmail me directly if/when things progress.
Thanks

I reckon a turn/phase a day would be about right, with maybe an upper limit of 3 days for responses (after which it would be "best guess" time to keep things moving).

So that's two of us potentially in ! I reckon at least two more, and we might have ourselves a mini-duel to try it out. Nothing too big, just a few killer karts and a small arena to see if the format works for us.

Kyle - will update via the geekmail if and when we get something solid together.

Yeah, we (TSAR) still play, ocassionally. There will be a game at a gaming event I hold at my house, this year.

The game event is, normally, centered around the miniatures games, "Ultimate Warzone: Universe Under Siege" and "Chronopia: War in the Eternal Realm."

In years past, other games have been played, and this year is no different. Car Wars has generated interest, so I will be setting up a game (details as yet undetermined, though it will, probably, be a $40,000 design limit at MicroMachine scale (2x)).

As for PBEM/PBF, there is interest. I would play. I admit that I do, sometimes, get distracted, but the concept is sound, and is fun, especially due to the fact that it allows pre-determined/pre-planned movement (something that I believe should be the norm when each turn represents two tenths of a second).

In the end, I know a few, at least, who would play. I will attempt to generate interest on TSAR's page.
