We had a question come up a couple weeks ago that we couldn't seem to find the answer to in the rulebook. Islands have a square outlined with a red dashed line for where the metropolis can go. For the smaller islands (1-2 building spaces), this red square covers/encloses the spaces where the other 4 building types can go. But for some of the islands (3-4 building spaces) the metropolis space only covers/encloses 2 of them. If a metropolis is built on one of these larger islands, can a regular building be put on the uncovered spaces, or does the metropolis "fill" the whole island?

Thanks in advance!

If their is still regular small white square you can still built on it. It does not fill it.

I presume those spaces have been made to force players to conquer other islands in order to accommodate their buildings/metropolises.

Here is a picture of the situation in question that I was part of. Based on the above response, the placement of the buildings highlighted with a yellow circle is acceptable.

Even though I can't find a specific reference in the rules, it seems to make sense. The board has places where the metropolis will cover some building locations and others where it doesn't even though more spaces could be covered. As said above, the number and placement of building locations is designed to force players to choose islands wisely or conquer additional islands in order to place necessary buildings to get a metropolis.
