Ironically, BGG, where the VTES lead-designer and official rule-monger resides, has a *lot* less traffic than VEKN.NET, where, ironically, LSJ is the Rules Director of the VEKN Inner Circle...

Ironically, I mean. ;)

Even if you believe that to be true, it should be worth a one-sentence mention that LSJ hangs out here.

That's not asked in the form of a question.

Can't add to the FAQ without a question.

1.4. Where can I discuss this game?

There are a number of forums for discussion of V:tES:
The V:EKN Forum - http://www.vekn.net/index.php/forum/index
The White Wolf Forums - http://forums.white-wolf.com/default.aspx?g=topics&f=19
The Yahoo V:TES group - http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/vtes/

rec.games.trading-cards.jyhad on Google.com
The BoardGameGeek forum (monitored by LSJ) - http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/2122/vampire-the-eter...

Yes.

Dealing with your negativity is very difficult.

If you had had any interest in actually improving the FAQ for the benefit of the players of the game, you would have followed the instructions in the FAQ for doing so.

It isn't like the location of the FAQ has changed in the last 10 years.
The instructions for constructively getting items improved hasn't changed either.

No negativity meant here.
I was just pointing out that BGG is a valid place for VTES discussion, especially since Scott watches over it... and considering that you posted the FAQ Update to boardgamegeek without mentioning boardgamegeek in the FAQ, I found it ironic.
And I can't see any good reason not to include BGG in the FAQ as a place to discuss the game.

OK, I'll send you an email. I just happened to have started a dialog with you about the subject in this thread.

May I ask why VEKN.NET is not a good place for VTES for you? Just curious, as you seem to have an account there also.

I didn't say vekn.net was not a good place for VTES for me.
I said that boardgamegeek is a valid place for VTES discussion.
It's a positive addition to the list of places you can talk about the game. Not an exclusion of another site.

I hear you. However, like I wrote earlier in this thread (though a bit sarcastic), I find it much more ironic that LSJ is not on VEKN.NET (as a member of the Inner Cirlce of the VEKN), where, compared to BGG, a lot more VTES discussion takes place, than that the FAQ didn't mention BGG. cool

This is pure speculation:

Why should LSJ go to VEKN? He's not paid to anymore. LSJ is no longer paid to be the NetRep for VTES, AFAIK. So he hangs out where his main interest lies, board games.

I don't know this for a fact, but it seems to be clear to me.

Really? You think BGG adds no value to VTES? Huh. *NO* value? I can't agree with you there. It can't hurt that people are talking about VTES anywhere, especially in a place with as much traffic as this place. Maybe not very much value, but certainly more than *no* value.

I feel like the FAQ should be neutral and informative. But perhaps that is wishful thinking.

I think "no value" was a tad bit strong. I'd say BGG adds a bit of value to VTES, in the way that some people see it's still alive. But I guess those people have an affinity to VTES and are not complete strangers to it.
I agree that a token visibility for VTES is better than nothing.

However, the VEKN.NET site is growing more and more attraction, the traffic compared to BGG is tremendous, and White Wolf links to VEKN.NET directly when clickin on "VTES". Which is a big plus, in my opininon.

LSJ being not there is a bit of a loss, as many players would assume VEKN.NET should be the place where the official(!) rules authority should at least sometimes hang out.

Wow.. just moseyed on over to WW's new site and you are correct here.. From their dropdown menu from the main site, "Vampire: the Eternal Struggle" does link to vekn.net, which is a good sign for them supporting it.

And http://www.white-wolf.com/vtes/ is officially a 404 Not Found error page.
That is kind of rude, in my opinion, since I'm sure that this URL is posted in a kabillion places promoting the game.
Who would be the person to talk to to make http://www.white-wolf.com/vtes/ into a redirect to VEKN.NET?

Incidentally, does VEKN.NET have *all* of the content that used to be on the old site? Including the incredible mp3:
whistle"I BLEED YOU FOR ONE AND THE EDGE BUT WHAT MORE CAN I DO?!"whistle

I realize that BGG is not a w-w.com or vekn.net tech support forum

But it doesn't work for me, can't be a browser problem; it's a 404 header coming back from the server. Happens on multiple browsers (just to humor the suggestion); force refresh, no caching. Even if I telnet to port 80 and GET /vtes, it comes back as a 404. And even when I check from another machine on an entirely different ISP and DNS server. It's definitely returning from the server that way. I kinda know how to test these things

It could be that white-wolf.com is running on multiple sites, and some of them have the redirect and some of them don't. Like, for example, if they have a US site and an EU site. Or it could be that one of us is hallucinating.

Damnamns informed us today that the link would be working. At first it didn't with me, but an hour later or so it did.
Maybe you are right, and WW has multiple servers.
I'm absolutely sure that I'm not halucinating devil and I assume you don't either. cool
Perhaps move this thread to VEKN.NET? laugh

Is it just me? or is this sounding kind of prickish still? I mean, they mention BGG but do they HAVE to say it gets minimal activity. Like they can't just put it as a source, they have to belittle it too? am I the only one that sees this as immature?

No, you're not alone. I for one am pretty disappointed by that attitude of some people. When the newgroup reached its end (when WW stopped production of VTES and LSJ quit his posting there), I've tried to make a case for keeping both Vekn and BGG, respecting both for its own mertis. I've tried to explain how I think BGG is the best low-threshold portal for everyone interested worldwide, with vekn being the place for the fanatics, tournament players, in-depth stuff etc. Some people agreed, some didn't, I had a good discussion with some folks about it which kindof ended in an inevitable 'agree to disagree'...all perfectly fine.

But it seems there's some people that have adopted an attitude of "vekn.net is where it's at and BGG sucks, so you'd be totally dumb not to hang with us", without actually phrasing it directly (perhaps because moderators would remove such a post). So apparently it's down to these little jabs at BGG now.
I really don't know why this happens. Even though I have yet to make an account there, I have nothing against vekn and I'll never make that kind of little side remarks about it. So I'm pretty sad to see some people take such an attitude in regards to BGG.

Of course the people that have an account at vekn will post more often, but I've already seen quite a few people posting on this forum who I can't recall ever seeing on the old newsgroup. I think this forum's going to pick up in traffic just fine.

Yeah, the Yahoo Group is nothing but mirrors of Lasombra's global announcements, but doesn't get mentioned as having minimal activity in the FAQ.

It would be better to add language to the "VEKN Forum" entry to encourage its use as primary, than to add language to any other entry in the list to make it seem less worthy.

P.S. http://www.white-wolf.com/vtes still a 404 error for me, and presumably throughout the US.

I am the first to admit, that I'm not a big fan of BGG.
And I agree, that the wording in the FAQ could be better, but I'm not maintaining it.

Indeed, I try to encourage players to join the VEKN.NET website. Because I think that for the VTES community it has the greater relevance. In no way I have said that BGG should be shunned. On the contrary, some minor presence here is a good thing. I just don't think that a lot of potential players will come out of the woodwork because of BGG; those that do because of that site do so because they have a prior connection to VTES.

On the other hand, WW links to VEKN.NET, so complete newbies are likely to land there.

And I strongly disagree with the notion that VEKN.NET is elitist, fanatic, tournament-only, etc.
The range of different skill levels, style of play, competitive vs. leisurely is large at VEKN.NET.
The new player is treated the same as the veteran: with respect and loving care.

Traffic on BGG is a bit less, compared to VEKN.NET, that's true. Having monitored both sites since LSJ announcement to retire from the NG, BGG is lagging behind wrt traffic and content. Just a fact (as seen from a biased player )

The attitude of some players regarding BGG could be described as a little bit descending. Without knowing the reasons behind it, it's hard to understand, I give you that. cool

Let's stay civil, maybe Lasombra will alter the FAQ so that BGG-users don't feel belittled, as this has no benefit to VTES at all.
And you others that have not yet created a VEKN.NET account - come over and try it out. We don't bite.
