Kahuna is one of the games from the exceptional range of two player games from the German game publisher Kosmos. It is essentially an abstract strategy game that uses area control as a scoring method.

The game consists of a board depicting a map of south pacific islands. Also shown on the map are lines between the islands showing possible links. Players have a hand of three cards to start the game. The cards all show one of the islands. On their turn players play a card (or cards), draw a card or discard a card. If players play cards then they lay down a bridge between the island shown on the card and one of the adjacent islands. If a player has the majority of bridges on an island then they remove all of their opponents bridges from that island and place one of their control markers on it. The round ends when the deck runs out. The player with the most islands gets one point. After the second round ends the player with the most island gets two points, and after the third and final round the player with the most islands scores the difference between the two players controlled islands.

This a simple and quick game that can be played on instinct or be given great thought and planning. The fact that upon controlling and island you remove your opponent’s bridges means a cascade effect can be created. By removing bridges from A that linked to B and C, you may cause your opponent to no longer have majority on islands B and C. Leaving them open for capture immediately. Upon capturing B, you may cause your opponent to no longer have majority on island D and so on. Players can also play two cards to remove an opponent’s bridge; this too can lead to a cascade effect. The game requires that players both protect their investments and also expand into their opponent’s territory. When both players do this, interesting things happen.
