Now I haven't even received my copy of the game yet, but surely, surely, this game is crying out for the Street Fighter license. Its a big license, but with the designer's Capcom connections and the fact the game has been a surprise hit I really hope they can pull it off. Lets all collectively cross our fingers!

Actually, I prefer the original characters and I'm not even a gigantic fan of the game. It's just more interesting and creative with the designer's own unique characters.

It would be cool to see expansions that include fighter titles. I would rather see a Super Smash licence though.

I think yomi's play-style doesn't fit with smash bros. In smash bros the only thing you need to do is to get your opponent off the stage so it would require a much more different mechanic than to get your opponents HP to 0.

The original design did in fact use Street Fighter characters.

I'm really not surprised to hear that; the game clearly has so much in common with SF. Has Sirlin ever mentioned trying to get the SF license at all?

I definitely prefer original characters to Street Fighter.

What I'd really like far more than SF in terms of license (and hence look and feel) are Guilty Gear and BlazBlue whistle DeGrey is the only original character as crazy and stylish as them (not nearly as metal though). I hope next expansion takes character design in this direction.

Many people are extremely tightfisted when it comes to license rights because anything negative that happens will reflect on the original property. It would be like owning a Ferrari and someone coming up to you, asking to borrow it. It might okay and you'll make a buck, but how much is that risk worth?

See Dune and why it hasn't been reprinted despite fans clamoring for it.

Wow, so it really was a SF game just denied the license. Whats wrong with you Capcom? You've missed a real opportunity there. Lets hope they change their minds after Yomi's critical and sales success.

Meh, let's not. Sirlin can do more unique things with his own characters.

Actually looking at the cards, it looks more like Grave.

The character card is Ken with "burning Vigor" as his innate ability. That's Jaina's

Grave used to be Ryu (who's cards you can see in the background).

The game's already taking inspiration from Guilty Gear, with DeGrey being Slayer (dodge into PAIRU BUNKAA).

That's another reason original IP is cool: you can have sort-of SF and sort-of GG characters in the same game, without adding on even more licensing headaches.

The street fighter characters were actually different than yomi guys.

Sirlin I think took best abilities and ideas from sf guys and merged them

...and I must say DeGrey looks way cooler than Slayer to mee, so Yomi rocks!
I still wish Arg looked less like a frog and more like scythe-bearing druid goth though.

See, I'd like this to go the other way: an actual fighting game with the Fantasy Strike characters.

Although, I do think if you were going to make a licensed version of Yomi BlazBlue would be a better fit. The fighters' powers are more varied and off-the-wall, meaning it would be easier to give each deck a unique flavor. I think in honesty I just want to see what he'd do with Carl Clover.

Sirlin has stated multiple times that that's where he'd eventually like to take the Fantasy Strike IP, but the reason he hasn't been able to do that yet is because developing a video game is a very expensive prospect for a third-party designer not affiliated with any major game studios. Basically, every copy of Yomi, PS, and Flash Duel sold helps to fund the (hopeful) eventual release of a 2-D fighting game incarnation of the Fantasy Strike IP.

There's a guy like that in the expansion pack, Quince. Normals are kind of rubbish, some even unplayable by default, and your Ace lets you summon a mirror image on knockdown. Which means you have twice the combo points, draw twice as many cards, and can play two combat cards (picking which one to use after reveal). Lasts until you fail to deal any damage.

Check it:
Grave=Hakumen: Pragmatic and powerful. Can counter.
Jaina=Ragna: Especially while in Blood Kain. Life drain for power.
DeGrey=Carl: Two people fighting (Spirit is Nirvana), Cultured.
Rook=Tager: Vines in the place of Magnetism
Valerie=Litchi: Combo can take you from one side of the stage to the other. Paint brush instead of staff.
Geiger=Hazama: Crazy stun on chains/time spirals. Jakoku Houtenjin is 0.0 speed super.
Setsuki=Bang: This one is just obvious. She uses shuriken instead of nails though.

Don't see any parallels for Arg Lum or Midori though.

I don't think sirlin's plan was to make his game similar to a horrible one like blazblue
