I was fortunate enough to pickup a nearly new copy of battlelore at a local game con. I also picked up a copy of the call to arms, goblin skirmishers and troll and country expansions.

What are the must have expansions? Anything else I should know about ?(good BL resources, etc.)

I'd love to paint... But I'm daunted by the task. Any suggestions are welcome. (I have local craft store acrylic paints, should I get something better or is that sufficient ?)

D.

David,

I won't be much help because I'll tell you to get all the expansions

I'm lucky enough to own them all except the latest, Code of Chivalry, and I can say I've enjoyed everything. The 100 Years War is a must have but very hard to find now - I'd also recommend getting Dwarven Battalion, Dragons, and Creatures.

Have fun - I absolutely love the Lore aspect of the game. If you have trouble finding playing partners, Toddrew & I are always available to show you around and play on Vassal

I have to agree with Dan.

Any of the newer expansions will be easier to find. But to my mind it depends on what you want from the game:

Epic - a more strategic and very good game (but longer).

Troop packs (100yw, Specialist packs, Horrific Hordes, Bearded Brave etc) - great to add variability in units set up - especially when used with Call to Arms and specialist cards.

Creatures/Dragons - some very fun beasts and a real fantasy element.

Heroes - some campaign aspects (growing hero), another fantasy aspect, some fun powers.

My suggestion is ALL OF THEM! But then, I would - I really enjoy the game a lot!

Cheers,

Giles.

He has been playing, he is just getting used to painted figures. I picked up the Dwarven Battalion and Goblin Marauders on Saturday to add to my troops. Alas it will be a while before they can hit the table... can't mix and match unpainted plastic!!!

Epic is my MUST have as I really prefer the extra space to move and the shared command rack to mitigate some of the card luck. It does take extra space and time but for me it is worth it.

I was initially worried about the figure count for painting but it has been a multi-year project that I just keep making longer by getting more figures. It is still a lot less figures that you would have to paint for any of the true miniature games. Now I see the beautiful 3D flocked boards and that adds even more to the long list of unfinished projects.

There are multiple painting guides around on the forums for BattleLore, and there are some that discuss the merits of the various paints. Most of mine are the craft store acrylics, but I have a variety of others that I have sampled. It seems that everyone has their preferences. I really want to try the varnish dipping next but probably won't because the figures won't match then.
