Sovereignty bill passes Montana House hurdle

Quote:
This session has been filled with talk of the state's rights versus the right of the federal government, and House Joint Resolution 14 asserts that Montana is a sovereign state and has the right to ignore and even reject federal law.

Quote:
The resolution states that Montana and its people have the sole and exclusive right to govern themselves as a free, sovereign and independent state.

We sure do!

This is just the latest piece legislature that is going through that is pissing me off. There are two other bills that are going through because the rest of the state doesn't like a couple of ordinances that the city of Missoula passed.

Why do we care about the contents of a non-binding resolution?

I mean, they may as well state that they've adopted chocolate pudding as their currency. Or bacon. It's a pointless political exercise to make them feel good.

Now when it's real legislation, I'll get worried. But this is just puffery that shouldn't be dignified with column inches.

It's no dumber than the official steps that North Dakota started considering to rename their state "Dakota" because removing "North" from the name would somehow make it a more attractive state for relocating and tourism.

You mean something like this?

"No law or rule shall compel, directly or indirectly, any person, employer, or health care provider to participate in any health care system."

Yeah, the voters in my state passed that last year in all 114 counties by a total vote of 71-29%.

Whatever happened to Jefferson's view that "a little rebellion, now and then, is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical"? Are we suppose to go through life like sheep? Liberals do this sort of thing all time. They use sanctuary cities to reject American immigration policy, banish the ROTC from federally-funded colleges, allow propositions to void marijuana laws, and are currently violating court orders to stop Obamacare.

South Carolina and John C. Calhoun supported states rights as way to support slavery. Montana, on the other hand, was the state that elected a woman to Congress before women were given universal suffrage in the United States. I'm sorry, but I don't see the comparison.

If abortion were somehow suddenly made illegal in the United States, do you think that no state would attempt to restore abortion rights? Do liberal Montanans love national government control so much that they are afraid of losing the Defense of Marriage Act?

I believe the idea of nullification was originally inspired by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, The Father of the Constitution, as a response to the Alien and Sedition Acts which made it a crime to publish false, scandalous, and malicious writing against the government or its officials.

Quote:
Don't you work for a University? Can they survive without students with federal Aid?

Of course, no one could ever or has ever gone to college without Mother Government to hold their little hand.

I don't think they have declared their independence yet, but I haven't checked the United Nations roster lately. Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Belarus relinquished their nuclear warheads, but I suppose Montana might get twitchy.

...

The Ninth Amendment and the Tenth Amendment are still part of the United States Constitution. If don't like them, I suppose you can always attempt to have them repealed...

The constitution only covers states that are a part of the United States. Montana is a sovereign nation now. So I vote to invade.
