Dear Chit Chatters, we have promised the little one to take her to see snow and hope (crossing fingers) to go this December right before Christmas.

I already have one trip penciled in and budgeted. I just wanted to see if there were other options out there.

What we are looking for:
-has to have snow on the ground around December 19th
-opportunity for her to play in the snow (sledding, snowball fights, etc.) with other children!!!
-skiing not necessary at all
-ice skating optional
-we will fly in and stay at a hotel

Thanks in advance!!!

kiss

We loved, loved, loved Quebec City, Quebec. It has lots of history. Unfortunately, the winter festival - one of its main appeals - is in Jan. or Feb., not Dec. But it's a nice little town.

Edit: you would need to get more info from a Canadian, though.

Lower Michigan (at least southeast) is iffy for snow, but if we have snow, my 13yo would throw snowballs and sled. Outside ice-skating is also questionable, but lots of indoor rinks.

If primary reason is for snow, I'd head west.

I was going to say near us, too.

Although, I worry, I don't know if we can guarantee snow in December. It hasn't been a problem the last couple years. But we will often have a thaw or two and if they hit it during that time it would be a bummer.

But maybe I'm being too cautious, we do usually have white Christmases.

If you came our way, there is even skiing nearby! Swiss Valley is a small mom and pop ski place, your daughter could get lessons there, it's a nice way to spend a day.

Yep. We've got a skate rink in St Joe as well. But as you said, while it is a reasonably safe bet that we'll have snow, it isn't a guarantee. Perhaps finding a place that is at a higher elevation would help in locating a sure thing on the snow.

It's a picture of Oklahoma, so... I never quite got it.

ANYWAY, In regards to your trip, I have to put a little plug in for the Upper Peninsula. It is gorgeous and guaranteed snow, but I also have to caution... it is a long ways away and there isn't an easy way to get there.

You could look near Traverse City area, that's lovely, too. I would think you could count on snow that time of year.

Yeah, December in lower Michigan is by no means a slam-dunk guarantee of snow, but the odds are pretty good.

The UP is a long way from everywhere. I think that's why I like it and romanticize it so.

(It pretends to be Michigan, but it's not even connected. Wisconsin is planning to annex it by force.)

Well, we'd like something close to a major airport or one that includes airport transportation. I don't relish the thought of driving a lot in the snow and ice.

Fine, then we get South Bend (Fiddler's Hearth) and Sandusky (roller coasters), and we're telling IN and OH to take it up with you. And we're KEEPING Mackinac Island!

I saw this article recently about Niagara Falls in Winter.

New England would be a good choice. Take your pick of historic Boston, maple syrup country, forested Maine....

If you want real mountains and deep snow, Denver or nearby Boulder might be good options, but I haven't been there in a very long time.

I'd suggest Ottawa, but the Rideau Canal isn't usually open for skating until January.
