As Gold! is now available in real life I want to start a little contest.

ABACUSSPIELE will provide 3x Gold! (the real ones) as prizes which we will raffle off among the participants who gave the correct answer. Additionally we will raffle off 1x 50 Geek Gold among all participants.

The "legal" stuff:
Please note that thumbing this thread is NOT part of the rules. I have the permission to run the contest but don't want to get in any trouble because of too many thumbs. If there is any problem about the contest or any mistake please send me a geekmail and I'm sure we will find a solution - thanks.

The contest rules:
The deadline for submissions is Friday 11th March 2011 09:00 GMT. Each user can take part one time. To do so you have to choose between the answers a, b, c, d and e and geekmail that answer to me. Please don't take part if you haven't even tried to find the right answer.

The game rules:
The game rules will help you solve the puzzle. You will find them in the weblinks section or use the following links:
English: http://www.abacusspiele.de/?m=spiele&action=download&pdf=308
German: http://www.abacusspiele.de/?m=spiele&action=download&pdf=305
French: http://www.abacusspiele.de/?m=spiele&action=download&pdf=306
Italian: http://www.abacusspiele.de/?m=spiele&action=download&pdf=307

The puzzle:
The following picture shows a game situation in a 2-player game. The cards in the middle are the last 5 cards that come into play before the game ends. It's player B's turn. Question: How many points can player B score until the end of the game at the maximum (including color scoring!) without player A making any silly mistakes?

The answers:
a: 39
b: 42
c: 43
d: 45
e: 46

Have fun!

Hi,

either I did not unterstand the rules or I miss anything here. Has player B already some points before this situation? Otherwise I do not understand how more than 30 points can be achieved.

Thanks and best regards,

Rene

No, it is only about the points Player B scores from the shown situation until the end of the game. Don't forget to steal a card in a color you don't have when you score.

The question is: How good does player A play?

- Does he optimize his point compared to the points of player B?
- Does he minimize the points of player B, regardless if he then scores even less points?

Player A plays as well as possible. He does everything he can to optimize his points and at the same time tries to minimize the points for Player B

Cool Idea. Making a Contest that makes us read the rules, clever promotion.
I gave it up after half an hour...really tricky! More contests like this one, please.

Thanks . I know you can do it! Give it another try and I'm sure you will succeed. Some hints: Don't give Player A any options (high cards or donkeys) which he could use to take cards you want. Don't let him score. Try to steal the highest card possible when you score.

So if a player takes the last card on the board, exchanging it with a donkey, then the game isn't over? The other player would have to take the donkey to end it?

Are we including final scoring, or just color scoring?

Yes.

Including final scoring. You have to sum up the points you got from that situation on - during the game and during the color scoring.

Great puzzle! Playing it several times a day on the iPhone was a big help! I noticed some moves I would have otherwise overlooked.

Since we're already past the submission deadline, I'll just share what I came up with:

B trades Blue 4 for Pink 3. B scores 14 in Pink, and takes Blue 8 from A.

A must take Green 3.

B takes Blue 4.

A must take Green 4.

B trades Green -2 for Blue 5. B scores 17 in Blue, and takes Green 4.

A must take Green -2.

B must take Blue 7.

For final scoring:
B scores 7 with the only remaining Blue card.
A scores 3 with the only Violet card.
In Green, A has a total of 1 (= 3 + -2), and B has 4, so B scores 4

B has scored a total of 42, which was answer B.

I had some doubts when submitting this answer, especially since the higher answers seem plausible. Scoring a set of green cards together (instead of just the 4) would be worth one more point, and stealing the violet card would be three more points.

Did anyone find a way to score more?

It was a pleasure for me to design this small contest and I hope you all had fun figuring out the best score. Thank you for taking part!
Now it's time for the solution ninja

As mentioned in the previous post the solution is 42, because we all know this is the answer to the question about "life, the universe and everything"

JosefK already showed how to score 42 points and besides the fact that you could also trade the Green -2 for the Blue 7 and score the Blue 5 in the color scoring, this should be the way to play best.

The winners will be announced today. Please don't submit solutions anymore (I got one yesterday).
