Hi,
I think I'll do an ASL Starter kit help app for android smart phones since nothing already exist.
This app could help new players with all combat phases, LOS , IFT, DRM and so on.
Since this would be a free app and not a game, do you think I can have any problems with MMP about their intellectual property?
Also, what would you like to find in that app?

Have you contacted MMP personally? Any answer regarding their IP here would only be conjecture.

actually I think MMP does not have the rights or any say in electronic ASL applications, I don't think that is part of their contract/agreement

I live in the city of Gulf, on the shores of Lake Water. This fun fact has nothing to do with this badge you're pointing at.

Just do it. If something like VASL can get away with it then an android play aid app shouldn't be a problem.

Years ago, before even Pentiums existed, there was the ASL GAP. Maybe you can find hints googling it.

I guess so.

I tried to use that ASL GAP many years ago, but this kind of applications are similar to using crutches: helpful when you do not know how to walk, but a nuisance once you're comfortable on your feet.

So start with only the basics: who's the attacker during each player turn, turn phases and possible dice results (ELR, cowardice, CH, etc.).

Have you ever seen this, which is a player aid that was written about 10 years ago now? It was for the PC but I believe it is similar to what you are wanting to do.

I'll start with something like this...

IFT...
I will ask the FP of the attack..
I will ask questions with yes/no/numberof answers...
This will set the IFT DMR and the IFT FP Modifiers...

Ask for the DR and give the final result.

Mapboard...
For the Mapboard, should be nice to provide inputs like;
Play board: W
Fire from: EE3
Fire to: EE5

and the app to answer:
range: 2
TEM: +2
Hindrance: No
LOS: YES

Hi Fard0che,

I am toying around with a pc "ASL-helper" for a rather long time now...

Me ideas look rather similar to yours

The IFT-stuff is not that hard to do, the mapboard thing is much more hard to go...

How are you planning to realize this (some type of lookup-table for all hex combinations does not seem to be econmic - but I did not find any other solution than entering the depth of the vasl los-engine...

Just curious - would greatly appreciate your answer...

Regards
Mac

Regarding the map LOS, remember that there are no "official" maps in ASL. You happen to play with a map and you check the LOS in the map you are playing. It can change with different printings of the map, or playing VASSAL, or with old-style and SK-style maps.

Hi Markus!

I never really thought about how to do it until now..

Taking into account my programmation skill on android, I should do something like a csv file.

a1, a2, ... represent the hex on a map.. lets say map W

the information could be (Range, hindrance, TEM)
if no range: -

MapW a1 a2 a3 a4 a5 ...
a1 - (1,0,0)(2,0,0)(3,0,1) -
a2 (1,0,0) - (1,0,0)(2,0,1) -
a3 (2,0,0)(1,0,0) - (1,0,1) -
a4 (3,0,1)(2,0,1)(1,0,1) - (1,0,0)
a5 - - - (1,0,0) -
...

and so on..

so I would ask
Map ? : W
Attacking from?: a4
Attacking at?: a1

Cross check into the csv table give: (3,0,1)
range: 3
hindrance: 0
TEM: 1

What do you think?
I never played on VASL so I don't really know how it works.

In fact, this tool will remain a
REFERENCE ONLY.

Hope it help new player to quickly learn how to check the LOS and calculate hindrance and TEM...

The tool could also be used to make an impartial decision in cases of conflict about the line of sight.
