Just played my first game last night. Do only walls block ranged attacks, or do enemy or friendly units as well?

Thanks!

Both walls and friendly units block ranged units. A new faction (jungle elves) has archers that can shoot through friendly units.

Do you mean enemy units?

Let's say I'm a dwarf making a ranged attack against an elf. Do walls, dwarf units, and elf units all block the attack?

To your second question, yes. Ranged units can only hit a target if they have a completely clear line-of-sight to it...any intervening card will block the attack (or rather, would be hit by the attack instead).

Okay, thanks. That makes ranged attackers a lot less powerful.

This.
All cards between you and the target block LOS (unless special powers change that)

See the rulebook, p.9, at the top:

Quote:
You cannot attack a card that is blocked by one or more other cards.

"Other cards" means any other cards -- friendly or enemy, unit or wall. Also, the first illustration on that page gives an example of a blocked attack.

True enough. Look at it another way, and it makes positional maneuvering an even more important part of the tactics.

It also opens up several interesting new special abilities:

- Archer (Jungle Elves): Shoots over/through other units (but not walls), only affecting the target square.

- Violet (Cloaks): Shoots through other units and damages all of them up to the target.

- Fire Drake (Phoenix Elves): May give an automatic 1 damage to every unit up to it target.
