Just an example:

You have a Shotgun (Ranged Weapon) and a Axe (sharp melee weapon) in your inventory.

Your starting a fight with a monster and draw cards.

Do you only resolve "ranged weapon" and "sharp melee" weapon or do you also usw "melee weapon" and "unarmed" cards?
Some Cards who specify the combat a bit more like "blunt melee Weapons" will be ignored.

I would think that the first card which matches any of the types of your inventory is the weapon which you use to attack.

No. You decide which weapon you're going to use and then draw cards until you find one that matches that weapon.

I don't have the rules in front of me right now, but I remember a sort of "declare attack" step when you decide to take this action. You decide what weapons you are using and then that is the card you use.

So, "I'm going to whack that zombie with my axe" or "I'm going to blow that zombie's head off from across the room" will determine what card you use.

(In your example, range would have to be taken into account anyway. You couldn't use your melee if the bad guy wasn't in range, so that will also limit what weapon you are using.)

A blunt melee weapon is a melee weapon.
A shart melee weapon is a melee weapon.

I plan to allow either weapon type to match a "melee weapon" card.

This is what the rules say on page 23.
