So I thought I had my next few game purchases planned out. But of course, today, my son says "I wanna play a game about wizards". Which in 9 year old land means "I want something fantasy themed".

Now, I know there are a lot of fantasy themed games, but I have a few criteria for the games he plays. I prefer him playing light euro's. (For the reasons of logic and strategic thinking).

So...fantasy themed light euro? The actual mechanic I'm not too concerned about. More that its not too deep (he's 9 and I want him to be able to more or less grasp the fundamentals of the game) and fairly represent a light euro style of play.

If you can play as a Wizard that would be cool too.

Would Gandalf appearing in Lord of the Rings or Lord of the Rings: The Duel work? Would a wizard-less fantasy setting like Castle Panic (too light?) or Defenders of the Realm work? Maybe Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation or Thunderstone or Dragonheart? Dungeoneer: Tomb of the Lich Lord has magic, but not a lot in the way of spells.

I have only played a couple of those, but have heard/read good things about all of them...just trying to get a sense of what direction you're thinking.

Jason....I would check out Drakon...very simple to learn and fun to play. It was one of the first games my kids played. And yes you can play as a Wizard...

Always cheaper to buy expansions than new games. And building up from what you already know is a great way to teach games. That said...
If you play Agricola, there's an expansion with Fantasy characters called The Legendary Forest.
If you play Carcassonne, there's Princess and Dragon.
Otherwise, most anything that has this sort of thing is AmeriTrash.

At least 7 of the 8 I mentioned above, plus probably a bunch of others, are light to light-medium Euros. Perhaps your definition of AT is quite different from my understanding of it?

How about Talisman (Revised 4th Edition) or Runebound (Second Edition)? They are fantasy, have wizard characters and are not hard games to play. Pretty sure a 9yo could learn to play relatively quickly.

My recommendation is go to the subdomain "Strategy" then "Browse" and choose category. Pick the fantasy category. Scroll down to the list and fist sort by rank, then add in any mechanics or further categories you are hoping to find e.g. economic, worker placement, etc.

Good luck

I would not recommend LotR: The Duel. It was a big disappointment for me personally.

I think a game like Talisman or Runebound may be perfect for a kid your son's age. LotR: Confrontation is a great one if your son is a fan of Statego.

Maybe Defenders of the Realm

It is a co-op with fantasy theme (and wizards). User suggested ages 8 and up.

Or maybe Elfenland? It is possible that a 9 year old could grasp the concept.

(No wizards, but dragons and elf)

I could also recommend The Scepter of Zavandor which is a rather light game about wizards gaining experience in different knowledges. There is not much direct interaction, only in terms of bidding. But otherwise it is good fun!

I can see this being good for young people who are not used to strong competitive games!

It was a pleasant surprise for me. We ended up not keeping it, but only because 1-on-1 duel games are not our thing. Can you say a sentence or two about what you didn't like about it, especially relative to the OP's situation?

You will probably get a more useful feedback if you reword your thread subject, like "Looking for fantasy themed Euro for 9 year old".

Another vote for Talisman, my son and step-sons were certainly playing it at age 9.

I'll be daring and even suggest Ravenloft for a wizard-mad 9 yo, most people think it is medium-light and it's nice and fast for that age, and it has wizards.

I don't like it that much myself, but many do - I would look at Lord of the Rings the Confrontation.

Stratego style play meets a fantasy theme with Euro-esque card play.

Gotta go with Lord of the Rings, or perhaps it's "lite" version, The Hobbit.
