MODERATOR Planning/Intermediate/Optional

Moderates Other Encounters

You have the power of moderation. When you are an ally in an encounter, before encounter cards are revealed, you may use this power to announce "moderation." You then play an Attack Card. After all three Encounter Cards are revealed, if either or both main players played a Negotiate, no moderation occurs. If both main players played Attack Cards, then the player who played the "moderate" card (i.e., the card with the middle value) wins. The number of ships is ignored. If you play the moderate card, or if your card matches either or both of the other cards, you decide the winner, and may keep either or both of the cards discarded by the main players. If the two Attack Cards played by the main players match each other, but are different from yours, the encounter is concluded normally. Regardless of the outcome, the card you played is discarded.

HISTORY: Less is more. More is less. Balance in all things leads to enlightenment. The Moderators shall bring balance to the Cosmos, even if they must burden themselves with ruling it.

FLARE

Reveal
Wild: As main player, if both you and your opponent reveal Attack Cards, average them out before calculating other card effects.

Reveal
Super: If only one Negotiate is revealed, if your card is lower than the revealed Attack Card play out the encounter as if you played the moderate card. You can declare the Negotiate player the winner, but he does not collect compensation regardless.

Commentary: This is a combat power from Matt Stone's set. I feel this power can be considered a nuisance by other players, but it should be alright if you use it in "moderation". It is best to use the power when you "just know" your side will lose the encounter otherwise. It is also helpful if your side is way behind in the ships count. If your side is ahead, it might be best to let the encounter be played out normally. The power is certainly useful in nullifying many combat power that affect encounter totals. Loser's ability prevails, but the player has less control of who wins for losing.

This power can work in games with Lyndon and Kennedy. Lyndon ignores the moderation and calculates his second encounter total normally. Kennedy would consider his Attack Card as if it was played by the main player on his side of the encounter in regards to the moderation. If this second Attack Card is the moderate card, Kennedy announces as such and his side wins. If it's not but would allow the opponent to have the moderate card, Kennedy keeps quiet. If it's not but it makes Moderator's card the middle card or match his card, Kennedy can either keep quiet or announce the status and allow Moderator to choose. Probably he will announce if on the same side as Moderator and keep quiet when on the opposing side.

Are you familiar with the game "Mediocrity"? Three players each pick a number and whoever has the middle number wins, and scores that many points.

You play a series of games, and add up the scores, and whoever has the middle score wins the series.

Then you can play a tournament, consisting of several separate series, and whoever has the middle score wins.

Poor Virus, Macron, Warpish, Warrior, Macron, Antimatter, Leviathan, Amoeba, Merchant, ect, ect, ....

Moderator really changes the mechanics of the encounters while auto-zapping a LOT of other alien powers.

Yep, but the key thing to remember is Moderator has to be an ally. Combat power players aren't going to want to invite Moderator. Their opponents have incentive to nullify their power, but do they really want to give Moderator another colony or cards? Even then they aren't guaranteed a win.
