I've read the posts here and I'm still confused about charity. Has anyone got the final definitive (from designer or publisher) word on this subject and can provide illustrative examples of all the nuances.
(Will be playing this tomorrow with my group and would like to get it all clear)
Thanks in advance folks!
Dennis

You probably have already decided how to play...

ok, that's what I understood from my reading of the rules.

"The wealthiest Merchant player at the moment" means that the wealthiest condition is temporary during the same phase, after one pays one friar or cardinal (and I assume he may choose who to pay), he may or may not be the wealthiest anymore.

This brings an interesting situation.

Example:

A (merchant) = 20 ducati
B (merchant) = 15 ducati
C (friar) = 7 ducati
D (cardinal) = 15 ducati

If A chooses C, A pays 5 to C.
Then D gets 10 from the bank and B doesn't lose money.

If A chooses D, A pays 10 to D, then B becomes wealthier than A and than C, who still needs donations.
B has to pay 5 to C.

So, if A chooses to donate more money, he forces B to donate some money too.
