This came up briefly in an earlier discussion on CoH, but I wanted to query the faithful on whether there is a demand (or would be) for a Spanish Civil War expansion for Conflict of Heroes. Although the subject is receiving a lot of attention at the strategic/operational recently, it seems to be largely ignored at the tactical level except for Niko's A las Barricadas! and Guerra Civil: The Spanish Civil War – 1936-1939 for ASL.

I have the 1st edition of A las Barricadas! but it is set at the platoon level (a scale I was never fond of) and Guerra Civil - The Spanish Civil War: 1936-1939 is ASL and, in spite of being a labor of love by the designers, one of the more graphically challenged releases of the series.

Any thoughts? Is CoH a good fit for the SCW and would there be enough support to justify the effort? What should counter mix look like and what maps from other games/expansions would work well for Spain?

Cheers,

Hawkeye

CoH - Spanish Civil War... this would be an immediate buy for me.

The abstraction level of the CoH system would be perfect for this setting since there were not many large battles, but lots of skirmish-like small conflicts. There would be a lot of interesting setups, going from partisan fights (giving an AtB-like flavour of high infantery low vehicle density), city fights on the barricades and of course the larger campaigns and battles like in Madrid or in Catalonia.

Counters and units could be much like the recent PoH units - early (pre)WW2 infantry ranging from the communist/socialist ad-hoc militias, the international brigades of course and up to the elite columns of the nationalist side (carlists, marrocan mercenaries, german expedition units, etc.).

Lots of potential, definitely, you are talking about a full-range 2-year-civil-war with all major European powers of that era involved in one or the other way.

I agree that the types of skirmishes fought in the Civil War would adapt pretty readily to CoH ... it's be a must buy for me, as well.

I love the hodge podge, random nature of the equipment used by both sides.

And although the game is set at the tactical level, I think you'd have to somehow take into account the difficulties the various POUM, the Anarchist and Communist factions had in working together.

There's a new film coming out that is set against the backdrop of the Spanish Civil War:

http://www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi2978388505/

No idea if it will be any good, but probably worth looking at and maybe it will stir up interest.
