The feel seems very different to me from something like the art I grew up with.

Oh, the *feel* is different? I thought you meant something about the layout, like cities in the wrong place, mountains not right, etc.

Its the standard one from the 70s. I had the Narnia map too. Pauline Baynes was successful as a children's artist in that her work was touchingly naive, really hailing from of a much earlier decade, which represents a foreign land to us now.

Those were the maps in the first edition of LotR that I read (my mom's, a three volume boxed set from the 70's). Nice map style...

To the contrary, some place-names (I forget which) first appeared on the Baynes map and are considered 'canon' (Tolkien supplied them). I think the placement of Dorwinion is original to this map as well, but cannot recall at present.
