I managed to get in a couple of turns this evening and things are heating up for both sides. The current situation is as follows.

Guderian’s 2nd Panzer Group manages to meet all the objectives that were set for it. Das Reich & 10th Pz. occupy Yelnya. These units hold on Yelnya is tenuous at best because units of the Soviet 13th Army have moved out of Spas Demensk and are driving on Yelnya. The end of turn 3 sees the German units with only one hex open to them for supply. The situation here is critical and a good deal of it rests on the fall of Smolensk. If Smolensk falls early in turn 4 then some of those German units can relive the Yelnya units. This should be interesting to watch. In this maelstrom the GD division pushed the envelope and drove North and captured Safonova . GD pushes toward Moscow ,looking a for sudden death victory, and along the way captures Vyzama. GD along with the rest of its sister units are out of supply.

The situation around Smolensk with 17th Pz., 18th Pz., & 29th Mot., is evolving slowly. These units were not strong enough to take Smolensk by themselves so they awaited the arrival of units from the 9th Army. These 9th Army units arrive near the end of turn 3. They clear a few Soviet units on the outskirts of the city. Smolensk at the end of turn 3 has been surrounded and Smolensk should fall on turn 4. Further to the South things are not so great for 2nd Panzer Group. Early in turn 2 a well placed rocket attack , heralding the start of Timoshenko Groups offensive, on 4th Pz. And 10th Mot. sees these units lose a step each. Despite these losses 10th Mot. & 4th Pz. Manage to capture Krichev and this is where they remain going into turn 4. The 3rd Panzer occupies a hex 3 hexes west of Krichev along the road. Things are very dicey here as the Timoshenko Group is just 5 hexes West of Krichev and they are driving Eastward. Just 2 hexes to the East of Krichev is the 21st Army which had pushed out of Roslav and is driving on Krichev. 3rdPz., 4th Pz., & 10th Mot., are caught in a Soviet vise and Krichev may have to be abandoned to avoid an encirclement. The units of Timoshenko Group & 21st Army are numerous and will find it easy to perform this operation.

To the North of Smolensk things have gone bad for the Germans. The German 14tMot. has been destroyed by the strong Soviet units in this sector. 20th Pz. has lost a step and retreated Northward. 12th Pz. has lost a step and has retreated westward almost back to its starting line. If this was not enough the Soviets have liberated Vitebsk. The Soviet 19th & 20th Armies have been leading this counter offensive with great success. Already several 9th Army units that were bound for Smolensk and points further eastward have been peeled off to help bring some stability to this sector. The Russians have the initiative here and prospects are very good.

To the far North 900 Lehr, 16th Mot., 19th Pz., & 14th Mot., are finding things very slow going and as of yet have had no effect on the general progress of the battle.

Overall situation sees it being very fluid for both sides. The Russians have some very potent offensive operations in the South and just to the North of Smolensk. The Germans have managed to accumulate a number of VP locations, but the question now is if they can hold on to them. 9th Army is just starting to get into the fight and it will be interesting if they can bring some stability to the North and South of Smolensk. So far it has been very interesting and I’m looking forward to see how it all pans out.
