For our second game I put the group through the second story (Inner Sanctum) and had a very fun game. Previously I had read some comments that with four players the keeper had an easier time winning so without letting the players know, I threw in a shotgun to the list of items and didn't take my starting 2 threat and mythos cards.
The investigators immediately felt uneasy after my first couple of turns where I summoned three cultists in each of the alter rooms and was able to stack my hand with mythos/trama.
Kate braved the basement by herself, finding the first item needed to unlock the next clue but she wasn't brave enough to hang out down there so she started to go back up the stairs until something in the darkness spooked her enough to run back down the stairs and into the room adjacent to the ceremony chambers (filled with mad chanting cultists!) Jenny, being the brave one, rushed to her side to protect her, bless her heart.
However the chanting from the next room turned to screams and everything went silent. The door to the ceremony chambers opened and to their horror a shoggoth came lumbering out towards them. Jenny, immediately used her special ability to pass her horror check and fled the room and back up the stairs leaving Kate alone again to face the unspeakable creature. (OH MY HERO!!!!)
Kate narrowly avoided the creatures attack and followed Jenny up the stairs but not without taking a very nasty wound. Just as they thought they would outrun the creature, they turned the corner and ran right into a cult leader pointing a boney finger and screaming "INTRUDERS!!"
Jenny rushed him as he set the hall on fire and Kate fled into the bathroom to unlock the next clue.
After finally defeating the leader and hearing the evil shogoth only a door behind them, Jenny tried to escape into the chapel but the door was suddenly jammed!! (my favorite play of the game)
She threw herself at the door (using her last skill token) knowing that if she wasn't strong enough and the door didn't give, she would be trapped in the flaming hallway with the shoggoth.
She broke through the door but only by the skin of her teeth!! (perhaps the most exciting roll of the night)
Meanwhile, Gloria and Michael were exploring the other side of the church and found the secret passage to the caves. Armed with the shotgun from the study, they crept towards the alter room cave and attacked the other cultists. I cursed myself for gifting them a shotgun which could shoot through doors.
They were feeling pretty tough until three more cultist appeared from the shadows and they watched helplessly as they fuzed painfully together into a second monsterous shoggoth and before they could fight back the cave was suddenly plunged into darkness!
Gloria was quickly absorbed by the monster, never to be seen again. Michael barely escaped and was met outside of the room by his friends Kate and Jenny. Sadly they told him that Marie was in the crypt and someone had to go back in the room with the shoggoth.
As they discussed their plan, four new cultists had formed in the basement ceremony room and started a march from the basement, up the stairs and into the hallway towards the chapel.
Jenny and Michael decided to keep the shoggoth busy while Kate (wearing the robes) slipped by and into the crypt to find Marie.
(The game really turned around for them at this point and all of their dice rolls were successes)
Harvey Walters (a bit old, slow and always late you know) arrived at the chapel, wondering where his friends might be while Kate found Marie and discovered the truth and what they must do.
Harvey never made it out of the chapel and was soon greeted by four charred cultists (smoking from a march through the firey hallway) which proceed to chant louder and louder until a Cthonian bursts through the chapel floor!!!! Harvey (fresh character, no wounds and full skill points) battled the monster with his shrivel spell and hurt it badly.
Kate, Jenny and Michael fled the caves, leaving the a hurt shoggoth to perish in the cave chamber (now also engulfed with flames) and climbed up the nearby ladder to stop the summoning ceremony but it is too late and they saw their friend Harvey Walters engaged in a battle with the Cthonian.
Michael tried to stop the monster but was tossed aside into the swarm of cultists and was practically dead. Jenny took the damn shotgun and critically hit it sending it back into the earth.
The Cthonian has been stopped and the investigators win!!
It was a three and a half hour long game (not including setup) and we were about 6 turns away from the final event card.
All in all it was very fun. I was constantly wishing for more threat, heck just moving the four cultists took my entire turns threat count! (a total of 20 threat was used to move them)
The shotgun really helped them, the biggest help just being able to shoot through doors. My pre-game thoughts were that if I didn't want them to have the shotgun anymore I would just make them lose it with a mythos card but I never got one of those cards! And even if I had, I might have not even had the threat to spare.
In hindsight, I perhaps should have sent the first shoggoth down the firey hallway and into the chapel first to fight the investigators but I decided to make a rush for it with the cultists instead.
Most importantly though, everyone had fun and the investigators felt hard pressed the entire time. This was important to me since the first game was a bit of a let down. They were shocked that they won even though it really wasn't very hard for them because of Harvey and his blasted shrivel spell.
I can't wait for us to play Story 5 now.
Great report, thanks!
After reading some other Inner Sanctum sessions, I think some really good keeper advice for plot 1B would be not to kill anyone until the objective is revealed!
Otherwise you will have a fresh character will a full load of skill points somewhere near the final room.
