Hi Everyone,

It's fantastic weather these days, so we like to sit outside and play some games. However, sometimes there's a few gusts of wind which make light playing pieces and cards fly away.

This made us wonder. Can the people of BGG recommend some nice games that are wind-resistant? First ideas we had were blokus, mahjong and dominoes - but there have to be more original choices.

Surprise us!

Games from GIPF Project should be resistant to wind. Same goes for Hive. And, possibly, Ingenious.

Even though there are score sheets, I suspect they could be weighed down so that you could enjoy a game of Roll Through the Ages: The Bronze Age.

I´suggest

Hive (as mentioned above) for 2 Players

my Topology for up to 4 playes.

and also Octiles.

Further, if you don´t like abstracts, you could try O Zoo le Mio or Dos Rios.

I'd think anything without cards or really small chits would be fine. Aside from abstracts (which almost all work) and games already suggested, the ones that come to mind are Taluva, Can't Stop, Mr. Jack, Aquädukt, most versions of Carcassonne and any of the 10 Days... series

Although there is a recorded game where a nuclear blast upset the board and jostled the stones.

What good timing. We're taking a catamaran cruise in Greece in August, and I was just today starting to make a list of which games I'd feel safe playing on the deck while we're anchored somewhere. Here's what I came up with from our collection:

goa
puerto rico
ra
pocket battles
rattus
medici vs strozzi
fjords
clans
taluva
finca
tikal
oceana
attika
peloponnes
seeland
burgen von burgund
alhambra
navegador
vikings

now to just figure out which ones I want to pack. probably going to go with Puerto Rico (breaks down to very little), fjords (never leave home without it), and either taluva or clans (for heavier pieces)

none of them will withstand strong winds (but what would?), but I suspect these will all be safe from breezes and whatnot, and the heavier pieces of taluva/clans would withstand a bit more.

I'm not so sure. Almost all of these have lots of small, light pieces that I could imagine getting blown around by even a mild wind. Ra would probably be fine, so long as you mind the VP chits.

Dominoes is my outdoor game of choice. Wind, humidity, rain--no problem.

Many games can be played with dominoes, but the basics (block game and draw game) are familiar to many people already, even children. Yet some domino games are pretty darned challenging.

There's great variety, and the games are scalable from one player to many.

If I were in Robinson Crusoe's predicament, I think I could do worse than have just a box of dominoes for gaming. They'd keep Friday and me busy for a good, long while--and if Thursday, Wednesday, Tuesday, and Monday showed up, there'd be room for them too.
