We are playing later today with 4 or 6 players not sure yet.

Is there a place that has good map setup we can use? We usually build the board but are considering not doing so today.

Check out the TI3 wiki (ti3wiki.org). On the fan variants page, there are a number of nice preset maps.

PsiComa especially designs some great maps. Although usually asymmetric, they are a blast to play on. The 5-player Ultimatum map in particular is quite famous.

Happy gaming.

There is an official add-on to the rules on FFG's website, in PDF format, for pre-set maps with balanced setup.

They made it after Shattered and before Shards, but i don't see anything in Shards that would prevent those rules from being used.

Found here:

If you do a 6 player preset by FFG rules I recommend adding 6 extra single planets around the outside, midway between homeworlds, turning the big 'hex' into a star shape. That extra world introduces some asymmetry between neighbors and livens things up a bit. It also pumps up the economy a little bit.
