My friend and I didn't like the mythical creature spam possible with Zeus. Also how it could slow a game to a crawwwwlll.shake
So instead we have it that you can only ZEUS the 3 slots one time each.

This worked pretty well for us, where you still have the power to get rid of creatures or possibly get a new one you want, but it eliminates someone with 20 gold from forcing some particular beast into being.

Are we not playing paying pawns to the gods, not the gods themselves?laugh

Letting someone with 20 gold get Zeus sounds like a mistake. That said, you can tweak the rules to allow Zeus to discard a creature, and then (if necessary) move down the other creatures to make the 4 gold spot open and fill that. Repeat if desired.

That way a player could spam their way into an unrevealed Pegasus/Chimera for example, but only by coughing up 4 gold plus however much they had to pay to get it revealed. Temples mess with this math, of course.

We just had a 5 player game go on about an hour longer than necessary because of the unlimited Zeus card search rule as it exists. One of the other 4 was able to keep cycling through the cards to keep victory just out of reach of the leader. Getting 20 gold is not overly difficult.
We will limit the Zeus ability to 3 times from now on. It's supposed to be a fun, rock'em sock'em game, not "Dominant Species". Get it done and start another game!

So basically despite everyone on their toes and near the point of victory, you all still managed to hold out for an extra whole hour? That must've been one helluva fight. Are you sure you want to mess with Zeus then?

That's an odd approach to an odd problem I think. Zues' power is one of the most underappreciated in the game often and usually it is a way, in our group, that the game will be over SOONER because someone will carry off an early win by using his power unexpectadly.

A few other pointers that could help:

-When everyone has a lot of gold, that means your bidding isn't very competative and that everyone is just taking the lowest cost god that suits them best. However you absolutely want to bid people up, so sometimes this means taking a god you know someone else wants. Making someone else pay a lot for Zues ensures there is less gold to shuffle through the deck with.

-I find Zues' power tends to only be useful when he is the first or, sometimes, second god down in the turn order. But, if you are a god, Athena let's say, playing before a Zues player with a lot of gold then a good idea would be to buy up some/all of the creatures first. Creatures don't refill until the end of the turn so you'll either make it impossible or else more expensive for that player to do what they want.

-If someone is collecting more resources than everyone else, everyone needs to be aware of that and make moves to reduce their resources. If someone is taking Apolo a lot, they need to be kept in check. Much of the play of Cyclades is the balance and interaction of each player trying to keep the other players from getting too much of a lead.

Admittedly, a LOT of the time was spent in tedious Analysis Paralysis by the very competitive one who can't stand to lose. He had an income of 8, got his income again, stole from the guy on the verge of victory (Tim). I had been on the verge of victory when Tim stole my metro and became a threat. Other 2 bumped up their income with invasions and they were each able to delay Tim. It wasn't Zeus alone that lengthened the game, but it did contribute at crucial times to the "here we go again".
But definitely, the Zeus power caused enormous delay, enough that it spoiled the experience. Better that it be a lucky shot at the end if the right combo comes up. This also means someone couldn't "buy" their way to a win with Zeus on steroids.

Our house rule for Zeus is to cycle the creatures. The 2 gold spot is dicarded, the 3 gold spot is moved to the 2 gold spot, the 4 gold spot is moved to the 3 gold spot, and the top card of the draw pile is place in the 4 gold spot.

We allow the player to do this exchange as many times as they have money for. We find it limits the potential of creature spamming without sacrificing it as a strategy.

You can't just count the cards and your stack of money to get the creature you want because if the Chimera pops out you've only got 2 more cycles before all your spamming is reset and money wasted.
