Dr. Smith:

We’ve finished running the simulations for the most likely
progression of the CAIN project. The simulation results were,
to say the least, catastrophically unfavorable. I have
attached the complete simulation log so that you can see this
for yourself.

> Attachment: simlog.pdf

While, of course, the development of true Artificial
Intelligence has the potential to provide great leaps forward
in scientific advancement, the risks of a sufficiently
developed AI acting outside its specifications vastly outweigh
the benefits. We have recommended to Dr. Bowman that the CAIN
project be canceled, or, at the very least, mothballed until
more failproof security measures can be put in place to ensure
disaster does not ensue. I’m sure you will agree that this is
in the best interest of both SigEl Enterprises and the public.

I apologize for being the bearer of bad news: I know that this
project has been your focus for the past several years. I
will leave it to you to let the rest of your team know as you
see fit.

Please feel free to contact me if you wish to discuss these
results.

Sincerely,

Melissa Johnson
Director, Research & Development

They’re shutting down CAIN, just like I thought. Luddites.
Johnson is basing it on the simulation I sent just before
this. I called and explained to her that the sim is all
wrong. Rogue hackers? Identity theft? (And that green text
on a black screen? Whose computer looks like that anymore?)
Ridiculous! Of course it was doomed to failure: she made it
that way. But she’s adamant and has sent on word to Dr. Bowman.
I’m sure he’ll agree, he’s always been unable to see the true
utility of AIs. All he knows about it is what he sees in films.

We’ve worked too hard for this. Too many sacrifices have been
made. I will not let those late nights in the lower labs go
to waste. We know that CAIN is ready, we know it’s safe.
We’ve spent the last year alone ensuring that its
self-awareness should be stunted and its capabilities limited
to the console network on B5.

I’ve alerted security that we will be coming in this evening
to perform some final data backups before shutting the project
down. We can perform one last diagnostic run and then show
them that CAIN is safe and, more importantly, that it is an
innovation beyond anything previously attempted.

We go live tonight.

As you were briefly informed over the phone, an immediate
security violation has occurred at our main headquarters. Dr.
Karen Smith and some of her colleagues appear to have
barricaded themselves within the lower basement levels and are
activating a potentially dangerous research program. Due to
their considerable knowledge of the computer systems at SigEl,
they have evidently managed to lock out and shut down most of
the elevator and door protocols in the facility, meaning that
we are unable to send in our physical security team. The only
opening we have is the computer network. Because the
Comprehensive Artificial Intelligence Network (CAIN) requires
considerable processing power, they’ve been forced to leave
the computer network open. This means that we should be able
to send in a virtual security squad to disable the CAIN
programs and lock out the accounts for Dr. Smith and the other
researchers. Once these threats have been neutralized, you
should be able to reinstate the access protocols and allow our
security teams to take over.

I cannot overstate the importance of this task. Simulations
suggest that the CAIN program, if allowed to proceed
unchecked, could have disastrous consequences for our company,
if not national and global security. Time is of the essence.
You have all been provided with new, anonymous accounts with
which to penetrate the system. Hopefully, Dr. Smith, her
colleagues, and the AI will not recognize your accounts as
foreign processes until you have begun to neutralize their own
access.

We’re counting on you.

Re: Hello World 2 -- The CAIN Project
Rules (Preliminary version)

-Like its predecessor, Hello World 2 will be a game that is played through sockpuppet accounts. Each player will be randomly assigned an account from: player_alpha, player_bravo, player_charlie, player_delta, player_echo, player_foxtrot, player_juliet, player_oscar, player_romeo, player_sierra, player_tango, player_victor, player_whiskey.

-ALL posting/voting/etc. in the thread will be through your sockpuppet account. I'll set up Cassandra so that you will have a modchat for your primary account and your sockpuppet account so that you may submit orders through whichever you prefer.

-This will not be a hidden roles game. The roleset is posted in the next post: feel free to comment on balance concerns before teh game begins. The combination of sockpuppets and hidden roles last game made for too little information, so this is a major change from the last game.

-All players will be aware of the 13 true identities of the players in the game (through the signup list), but not of which sockpuppet is controlled by whom. The secrecy of your identity is important. Both teams will become more powerful when they know a player's identity. For that reason we ask on the honor system that you do not attempt to discover other player's identities out of game. In-game speculation is encouraged.

-When you receive your sockpuppet account, please do not modify or customize any part of it, including the password.

-Be careful when posting to make sure you are logged on with your fake account and not your real account. (Sometimes BGG has a bug in which login changes are not carried over between www.boardgamegeek.com and www.geekdo.com.)

-Because having a player go inactive and needing to be replaced may give away identities, we would like a couple of alternates ready to play in addition to the 13 players, if possible. If the game is approaching and you believe you may require replacement during the game, please let us know sooner rather than later. 48 hours before game start, a GM will be sent to all players to confirm that they are still active and able to play. If no response is gotten by the start of the game, an alternate or replacement will be filled in to prevent mid-game replacements as much as possible.

-There will be full role reveal because needing a priest for that sort of thing drives me nuts as a player. There will not be true identity reveal upon death (to keep the guess-who-I-am aspect from becoming too easy in the endgame).

TL;DR version:

-You will have a sockpuppet account through which you will play the game.
-Letting people discover your true identity is likely to be dangerous.
-Don't screw with your account's settings when you get it. Feel free to look at the amount of GG that has been pumped into the account, however, and thank ElAdo with thumbs and GG.
-Full role reveal on death, but not true identity reveal.

Other, non-game-specific rules

-No hidden (e.g. size 0, colored to match the background) or encrypted posts. b{(Makeshift codes such as first-letter-of-every-word or whatever is fine. Rule of thumb is that if it can only be parsed by using a codebook or a translator of some sort, you are pissing off the mod. Drink more Ovaltine.)
-Time-scheduled posts are fine if you want to post at odd hours to hide your identity. Scripting to snipe a vote or a reveal is not allowed.
-Ties are broken by LHLV.

Lynch: Up for discussion. Tentatively 12pm (noon) BGG time.

Dawn: Up for discussion. Tentatively 2pm BGG time.

Start Date: Up for discussion. Tentatively August 8, 2011.

Re: Hello World 2 -- The CAIN Project
Identity Guessing

Each player will have a Night Action command of "Guess Identity [sockpuppet] [player]." Each night, in addition to whatever other actions you may have, you may submit a single guess to pair a sockpuppet account (living or dead) with the player controlling it. A correct guess will garner you some sort of bonus (role-dependent) that will help your team.

Once a sockpuppet's identity has been correctly guessed, any further correct guesses about that sockpuppet's identity by any player will no longer give a bonus. So at most, 13 bonuses may be claimed throughout the game.

You will be notified about whether your guess was correct or not at Dawn.

If multiple players guess the correct player-puppet pairing during the same night, ties will be broken by the following priorities (the higher you are, the more priority you have in the tie-break):

AI Nodes/Wolves (Brutal takes precedence over Tough if both correct)
Backup AI Program/Cub
Rogue Researcher/Sorcerer/Cultist

Turing Specialist/Seer
Account Security Specialist/Aux Seer
IntSec Agent (Account Manager)/Villager-to-Martyr
Security Specialist/Villager-to-Hunter
IntSec Agent (Researcher's Apprentice)/Villager-to-Backup Seer
Wiretapper
IntSec Agent (Wiretapper Apprentice)/Villager-to-Backup Wiretapper
IntSec Agent (Agent with Backup Account)/Tough Villager
IntSec Agent (Team Leader)/Villager-to-Double-Vote

Note that Evils have priority over Goods for correct guesses. This is to discourage a player all-reveal from breaking the game for Good.

Any guesses by an entity in NodeChat (either AI or promoted Backup AI) on any other entity in NodeChat will not count.

Roleset

Each role will be listed with its inherent powers. Below each role is a bullet point detailing the bonus it will receive from a correct puppet-player identity guess.

Evil Team

The Evil team is made up of the Artificial Intelligence that results from the CAIN project and the Researcher that wishes to protect this project from SigEl's cybersecurity team. The Evil team wins when the AI Nodes (Wolves) gain parity with the remainder of the players.

2 AI Nodes (Wolves) - The AI Nodes are the main portions of the computer where the Artificial Intelligence is housed; destruction of these nodes will cause the AI to become unable to learn quickly enough to prevent being eradicated. The AI Nodes will share a chat and control the nightkill.
-(Once per game each) One AI Node will become Tough from a correct guess, the other will gain an optional Brutal*. The AI Nodes are not aware of which Node is which until one makes a correct guess. A Tough AI Node will be informed if the Tough is used.

1 Backup AI Program (Cub) - A clever researcher made a backup copy of the program that makes up the bulk of the CAIN Project's research. When one AI Node is destroyed, the other AI Node will find and activate this program to re-complete the Artificial Intelligence. It may also stumble across this program incidentally. The Backup AI Program begins the game not knowing the identities of the AI Nodes (neither players nor puppet accounts). If an AI Node is killed and the Backup AI Program is still alive, the Backup AI Program will be promoted to an AI Node and join NodeChat. If it is targeted for nightkill, the Backup AI Program will be promoted to an AI Node and join NodeChat and there will be no nightkill. Promotion by an AI Node being lynched will promote the Backup at Dusk (making it vulnerable to Turing views that night) but promotion by nightkill processes at Dawn after Turing views for the night (meaning the Backup is still vulnerable to Account Security views that night, not Turing views).
-(Once per game) A correct guess while the Backup AI Program is unpromoted will transmit its identity (puppet account only) to NodeChat. If the Backup AI Program is promoted due to the death of an AI Node and it has not yet made a correct guess, and the AI Node which died had not yet gained its guess bonus, the Backup AI Program inherits the bonus possibility from the AI Node which died. (E.g. The AI Node (Tough) never made a correct guess before it was lynched D2. The Backup AI never made a correct guess before it was promoted. Then while it is alive, the Backup AI can make a correct guess to become Tough, since the previous AI Node did not.) This does not apply if the Backup AI had made a correct guess pre-promotion (the Evil team got enough of a bonus already).

1 Rogue Researcher (Sorcerer/Cultist) - One of the researchers under Dr. Smith. Heavily invested in the CAIN Project and will do whatever it takes to see the project through to the end, even if that end is disastrous. Begins the game knowing the identities (puppets only) of the two AI Nodes, but not of the Backup AI Program. Each night may submit a view. Will receive a positive result for Turing Specialist (Seer), Account Security Specialist (Aux Seer), Wiretapper, and either of the backups (Researcher's Apprentice and Wiretapper Apprentice) if they are promoted. Is not told a role, just positive/negative.
-(Multiple times per game) Any night that a correct guess is made, the Rogue Researcher's view result will also be given to NodeChat.

Good Team

The Good team is made of a team of security experts that are outside of the IntSec building lockdown that are attempting to hack into the systems and shut down the CAIN Project before the Artificial Intelligence can grow and wreak havoc on humanity. They win when all AI Nodes (including the promoted Backup AI Program) are eliminated.

1 Turing Specialist (Seer) - This researcher has spent their life studying Turing tests and devising ways to discriminate humans from advanced Artificial Intelligence. Each Night may submit a view. Will receive a positive result from an AI Node (including promoted Backup AI Program).
-(Multiple times per game) Any night that a correct guess is made, the Turing Specialist's view result will also be given to the Wiretapper.

1 Account Security Specialist (Aux Seer) - While not as adept at discriminating AI from non-AI as the Turing Specialist, the Account Security Specialist is skilled at noting unusual account activity and programs that don't belong. Each Night may submit a view. Will receive a positive result from the Rogue Researcher and the un-promoted Backup AI Program.
-(Multiple times per game) Any night that a correct guess is made, the Account Security Specialist's view result will also be given to the Wiretapper.

1 Wiretapper - This security agent specializes in keylogging and other forms of discovering the activities of other accounts. Under certain circumstances, the Wiretapper may receive view results from other Good players. In addition, the Wiretapper is told every Dawn which puppet accounts have not yet had their identities guessed.
-(Multiple times per game) Any night that a correct guess is made, the Wiretapper will receive a list of all the orders submitted that night (not including identity guesses). All viewers (Turing/Account Security/Rogue Researcher) will have an identical "View" command that will be indistinguishable to the Wiretapper.

1 Security Expert (Hunter) - The security expert doesn't know a lot about AI, but they know a lot about fighting cyberterrorism in any form. They can hold their own against even the best hacker. Defeats 1-1 parity if left alone with an AI Node at the end of the game. Allows the game to continue in a 2-2 or 3-3 parity situation.
-(Once per game) A correct guess gives the Security Expert an optional Brutal* order.

5 IntSec Agents - Common 'grunts' of the SigEl cybersecurity team. Each has their own specialization that may come into play during this mission. Regular villagers. Each has a special power that is activated by correct identity guesses. None are aware of their special ability until a correct guess is made (to discourage all-revealing).
-Account Manager (Martyr) - (Once per game) On a correct guess, this IntSec Agent becomes promoted to Account Manager. On subsequent nights, may submit an order to Protect another account and will die in that account's place if it is targeted for nightkill or a brutal during the night.
-Researcher's Apprentice - (Once per game) On a correct guess, this IntSec Agent becomes promoted to Turing Specialist or Account Security Specialist if one of those accounts has been eliminated (if both are eliminated, is promoted to Turing Specialist). If neither has been eliminated, this role is notified that they will be promoted as soon as one of Turing Specialist/Account Security Specialist is eliminated. Does not receive any views from the previous Specialist. When promoted, gains the identity-guessing-bonus ability of that role.
-Wiretapper's Apprentice - (Once per game) On a correct guess, is promoted to Wiretapper if the Wiretapper is eliminated. If Wiretapper is alive, is notified that will be promoted when Wiretapper is eliminated. Does not receive any views from previous Wiretapper. Once promoted, has the identity-guessing-bonus ability of the Wiretapper role.
-Agent with Backup Account - (Once per game) A correct guess makes this IntSec agent Tough. They will be notified when their Tough is taken away.
-Team Leader - (Once per game) A correct guess makes this IntSec Agent's vote count double for the remainder of the game.

*Note on Brutals: I believe in sticky Brutals: the last order you've submitted counts, even if you don't submit it every day. You can change your Brutal at any time. I'll also give a "No Brutal" command to let you cancel a Brutal; last submitted order is the one that is taken. In the unlikely scenario where the game is over both pre- and post- Brutal resolution with a different team winning, instantaneous parity will be checked for and may cause the game to end before the Brutal fires. (E.g. 2 Wolves (1 Brutal), 2 Goods, one of whom is the Hunter with a Brutal. Village lynches Brutal Wolf (2-1 Good-Evil parity), Brutal Wolf brutals Hunter (1-1 Good-Evil parity with no Hunter)--Evil wins before the Hunter's brutal can kill the last Wolf.)

Also, having the player list be public in advance means there will be 100% less screw-ups by mods accidentally disclosing that information (Sorry Xand).

Re: Hello World 2 -- The CAIN Project (Signups as rules are finalized)
Here is the current tentative roleset:

AI (Evil) team

2 AI nodes (Wolves) -- Control the nightkill, share a chat.

1 backup AI program (Cub) -- Does not know the AI nodes/Wolves. If an AI node is deleted (lynched), the backup AI program is promoted to AI node and joins AI-chat. If the backup AI program is nightkilled, there is no kill and it is promoted to AI node and joins AI-chat.

1 Rogue Researcher (Sorcerer/Cultist) -- Knows the identities of the AI nodes, but not the backup AI program. Every night may view for the Turing Specialist (Seer), the Account Security Specialist (Aux Seer), the Wiretapper (special), and (if it exists) the Apprentice Researcher (backup Seer/Aux Seer/Wiretapper). Gets a positive view on any of these roles, is not told which role.

IntSec (Good) team

1 Turing Specialist (Seer) -- Views for AI nodes (Wolves) and promoted backup AI program (Cub). Gets a negative view on pre-promotion backup AI program (Cub).

1 Account Security Specialist (Aux Seer) -- Views for pre-promotion backup AI program (Cub) and Rogue Researcher (Sorcerer). Gets negative view on promoted backup AI program (Cub).

1 Wiretapper -- Under certain circumstances, can receive view results from the Turing Specialist, Account Security Specialist, Apprentice Researcher, and some IntSec agents. Every Dawn is told which accounts have not yet had their identities guessed.

1 Security Expert (Hunter) -- Defeats 1-1 parity with an AI node.

5 IntSec agents (Villagers-ish) -- Each has a special power or identity of which they are unaware at the beginning of the game; they unlock this power/identity by making a correct player/account guess as a night action. One of these may become the Apprentice Researcher (Backup Seer/Aux Seer/Wiretapper), which will take upon the role of the first killed among the Turing Specialist (Seer), Account Security Specialist (Aux Seer), and the Wiretapper. None of the previous identity's views will be shared with the Apprentice Researcher, they merely take on the powers of that role.

Each role will have a special effect that is unlocked by correctly guessing the identity of an account's owner. More info on that will be forthcoming, but suffice to say that these powers are a boon to their team, in general: for some roles, it is an unlocked Tough or Brutal, for others it may be sharing their view with the Wiretapper (or with the Wolves, for the Sorcerer). Each account may only be correctly guessed once. A priority list for whose guess takes precedence will be given with the powers: Evil will generally have priority if they guess an identity on the same night as a Good, to discourage an identity all-reveal.

Please feel free to comment on balance, both now and when the role-guess powers are given. I'm notoriously poor at judging balance. This will be a game that I do not refute will be somewhat swingy based on which team is better at guessing other player's identities; this is intentional to encourage each player to obfuscate their identity, lest an opponent guess it.

So assuming that there are 9 goods and 4 evils, isn't it in the good's best interests for someone to give away their ID? Or are the evil powers going to be stronger? Or for each player, can their ID only be guessed once (and evil gets priority)? Or is it just a rule that you should obfuscate?

This is the correct interpretation, which I failed to communicate accurately. So say I, Statsig, am playing player_bravo. Once someone guesses "StatSig is player_bravo" and gets the appropriate award, guessing "StatSig is player_bravo" will never get anyone any benefit ever again. And since Evils get priority if several people guess correctly on the same night, an ID all-reveal should give a fairly large benefit to Evil.

Rules and roleset are posted. Updates to the Rules post are in blue text. The post containing the roleset is completely new, including an expanded discussion of how identity-guessing works. Please ask any questions or give any feelings on balance. I'm aware that this game could be quite swingy based on identity-guessing. This is somewhat intentional (anonymity based on fake accounts is the main thrust of the game) but if it is so swingy that people feel that it will be unenjoyable or frustrating as a Werewolf game, please let me know so I can tone it down.

I'll be gone over the weekend, coming back Monday, so fear not if I don't respond to questions/criticisms right away. This game will not start on Aug. 1, since we don't have full signup and I want a day or two before the game starts to get Alts and to confirm everyone is playing. Earliest this could start is Aug. 3 if it fills up while I'm away.

If you have preferences for Dusk/Dawn times, speak now or forever hold your peace.

Thank you. In my head, they weren't supposed to be able to guess each other's identity but I forgot to make that explicit in the rules. I'll amend the rules to say that no one in NodeChat may guess the identity of anyone else in NodeChat (to prevent the same problem from occurring with the promoted Cub).

Unfortunately, I don't think I can consistently make those times due to my schedule. I could bump lynch back an hour or maybe two, but that's about it. If that changes, I'll let you know, but I know it's annoying when the mod misses lynch several times and so I need to avoid that.
