I'm working on a new idea for a simple siege type game, with hordes of (things) coming at you. So far it's just abstract, but a number of themes could probably work. I'd like to find something different, though, than the typical zombies or infantry or whatever, and hopefully whatever it is might inform more of the mechanics.

If you're starting with a mechanic but you want a theme that fits well get it working and then describe the type of siege and I bet we can find a historical situation that fits well. There are some neat ones to choose from...

Roarke's Drift
Arnhem
Stalingrad
Helm's Deep
The Alamo
Constantinople
Khartoum
That one in Afghanistan described in that Flashman book
Athens or Syracuse in the Peloponnesian War
Khe Sanh (Viet Nam)

I think I'm leaning away from military conflicts... something different.

Just a few hopefully different ideas of the top of my head, most of which on second look seem dorky but one might fit ..

Antibodies fighting off a virus.
Placing sandbags/digging trenches to try to stop a river bursting its banks/fighting a forest fire.
Dealing with customers at the opening day of the big summer sale.
Some sort of shadow monsters that are attacking for some reason and can only move in darkness so you're lighting lights.
Explorers surviving on a canibal island/lost dinosaur plateau/pirate cove.
The beatles trying to survive their fans.
Something a bit like "Night at the museum" with exhibits/toys/cars/whatever coming to life and having to calm them all back down.

There are probably a lot of others too as well as obviously a host of real and fictional military situations.

Yup, that's definitely more of what I'm looking for. I know the word "siege" conjures military conflicts, but the idea of being "besieged" could work for all kinds of things.

Ants around a picnic.

If this didn`t help:

Ants around a scientific base built to investigate the surprising intelligence seemingly appearing in the ant population of this area (Phase IV - The Game).

Hippies around Woodstock Festival 1969.

Bolivian Soldiers around Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

This is a fantastic idea. I love it!

Anyways, how about flipping some normal conflicts? I mean, instead of following the "normal" good guys, you play as the baddies? For instance:
From Battlestar Galactica (the remake): Human rebels stranded on Caprica attacking a cylon base, and the cylons having to defend themselves
Dracula/the monster of Frankenstein/some other monster/horror thing is hiding in a castle/swamp and the angry mob of villagers are approaching - time to defend yourself! (think the battle in Disney's Beauty & The Beast, for instance...)

That is brilliant. Makes me think of this song (which actually could provide more ideas for the game if you went with this idea):

Growing older whilst fighting off the signs of aging.

[EDIT]
Attacks of wrinkles, creases, dry skin, hanging tits, saggy bottom, grey hair, less hair, stubbly/dark leg hair, a "ronny" (= a mustache),...

Defenses by creams, lotions, clothing, surgery, mystical rituals (with varying degrees of failure!),...

The bolded parts really made me laugh. I love the way you snuck it in there. Or maybe I just missed that lesson in high school history class!

As for the OP, I'm glad to see someone came up with some creative suggestions. Here are a few more to throw in the brainstorm stew:

Lunch rush at a restaurant
Shark feeding frenzy
Fans arriving at a sporting event/concert
Mosquitoes coming at you in the evening

How about this:

You're a newspaper editor and you have a deadline to make, but your reporters haven't submitted their articles yet, and then, with one hour to go, they all submit them at once.

I know the ant thing has been said already, but the first thing I thought of was the short story "Leiningen Versus the Ants"

The second thing I thought of was the classic candy factory episode of "I Love Lucy".
