I wish I could say that I was the one that pulled off this turn, but it was someone I played on Isotropic.

#1 Bingo: 249 points (192 ▼, 4 Colonies, 5 Duchies, and 2 Estates); 22 turns

#2 mikehulsebus: 38 points (3 Colonies, 3 Duchies, a Province, 1 ▼, an Estate, and 9 Curses); 22 turns

cards in supply: Ambassador, Caravan, Chapel, Colony, Goons, Grand Market, Jester, King's Court, Outpost, Platinum, Torturer, and Treasure Map

Now, to be fair, I do have to point out that I'm just noticing in looking at the log that he put
Constraint(s) used: required: Caravan, Chapel, Goons, Grand Market, King's Court, Outpost, Torturer, Treasure Map. So in other words he hand-picked the set.

Regardless, this was quite the turn he had. I tried my best and learned to always look at the set that a proposed opponent has chosen to make sure that it's random.

Here is the turn, presented in its full detail:

— Bingo's turn 16 —

Really, why don't you just tell us he played 7 Goons and bought 24 things?

Because that's not what happened. By my count, he bought 25 things with 7 Goons in play--on his Outpost turn. He bought 6 Goons with 1 Goons in play during his regular turn, and used a King's Courted Caravan to overcome the 3 card Outpost hand.

Rule of thumb: when an opponent picks most of the setup himself, it's because he has a specific strategy in mind. He's setting you up. Take warning.

I think I know one player to avoid in the future - not a big fan of playing against someone's preset deck with a prepared/tuned strategy.

It's people like this that have made it hard for me to find opponents to playtest the "Recommended Sets" from the rulebooks for my reviews. Everyone thinks I'm trying to do the same thing - set them up, when in actuality I just want to see different people's approaches/strategies/etc. for each of those sets.

Not necessarily. I might custom pick a setup because it looks fun. I might not have ever played it before. And even if I custom pick a setup with some idea of the card interaction between them, I try to pick setups that have some sort of balance of ideas.

I don't know if that particular person custom picked strategically or not.

Also, even if someone does go into a setup knowing how he wants to proceed. It's not guaranteed he'll be able to pull it off or that someone else won't figure it out and play just as well.

I always decline games where an opponent requires specific cards for this very reason.

I'm much less impressed with turns like this when they're planned ahead of time. A large part of the skill of Dominion is determining what to do with the random set in front of you.

If you've solved a particular set, good for you. Why not just play it solitaire?

For this reason it'd be nice to have to the option to put a little note in a game proposal, like: "I want to test a recommended set"

Yeah, as i mentioned I definitely learned my lesson.

I realize there's no "right way" to choose kingdom cards if you're having fun, I have a friend that likes to play the same set twice in a row (gah!). For me though, it's my feeling that everything should be random and once you play a set of cards, it's not really worth playing again. For me, the fun is seeing what cards are good this round and discovering the path to victory. Once I play a recommended set once, that's it for me.

Not that I'm saying this is what he did, but one of the thing about Isotropic is it can rate you, so I feel like some people could be tempted to hand pick sets that they know they've figured out.

And yeah, I definitely agree that this would be more impressive if the other guy hadn't basically set up the cards so he could pull off this sort of turn. Even still, I thought it was something to see.

This person had a set-up in mind because he wanted to have that awesome turn. Reminds me of a game I played last night. My opponent kept buying King's Court, Laboratory, and Spy. Didn't matter if he had $8+, he would buy more cards to give him more draws and actions. Soon every turn of his took 5 minutes. As for me, I played 1 or 2 actions then bought something. Buying Goons helped, but I was able to get some Provinces and bought Duchies. I won with almost twice his score.

It's not about the actions; it's about the points. As for the OP's opponent, I might have resigned a turn or two before if I sensed he was just toying with me. I get it you can have good synergies of cards, but really, you do not need to have a 10 minute turn with 30 actions ending with 8 buys and $50 to spend. It's overkill. It's obnoxious. I sigh when isotropic gives a set-up with King's Court and Bridge. I know how that game is going end.
