Does anyone give a name to the group that you are trying to overthrow? Other than just calling it "the government"?

I recently picked up this game and have been wanting to get it to the table. But I ~h~a~t~e~ politics. What I have been considering doing is each game change to some new evil threat.

Ones I have considered: the PTA, the Shriners, the US Post Office, United States Tennis Association, CampFire Girls, Marriott Rewards Club, and Orange Glo International (OxiClean is people!) ..... I have also thought about some fictional ones to use: Torchwood Institute, National Association of Marlon Brando Look Alikes, Skynet, or the Peoples' Front of Judea ..... Or just go for broke and pick everyone's favorite large evil oppressive organization: Hasbro

And while Im at it? Anyone use special missions beside just "missions"? Steal the plans, escort the femme fatale to safety, stop the convoy, blow up the base.

Maybe this is just a lack of creativity on our part, but we usually just say spies, the empire, or bad guys.

I'll have to start referring to the spies as Baby Kittens from now on, however.

When I first designed the game, I called the bad guys the 'government' for lack of a better idea. But upon playing with my family, my dad didn't really seem to get into it. I asked him why, and he said that the government had been employing him for the last twenty years, and they'd been good to him. That made me see things differently for sure, so I renamed the enemy 'The Empire,' with the idea of some oppressive force taking over a people and their home.

I guess maybe that's still political, but it seemed like a clearer good vs. evil to me. That concept didn't make it into the final version, but anytime I introduce the game, I always refer to the Spies as Imperial Spies, working for the Empire. And you can also see it in my original introduction to the game on the BGG page, "The Empire must fall..."

So, that's the idea anyway

Take a look at or pick up Illuminati by Steve Jackson games. That should give you plenty of inspiration. Or, if you're really ambitious, read the Illiminatus trilogy by Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson.

I have the book. It was actualy a quote by Wilson that got me thinking on the topic. From the book "Right Where You Are Sitting Now" -

If I were the head of the illuminati, I certainly would not call it by that name; I'd call it something innocuous, like the Parents-Teachers Association. Better still, I'd call it the John Birch Society, and advertise it as an organization 'opposed' to the illuminati. That way I'd be able to rope in all the people who are against the illuminati and use them as unwitting dupes. This is such a plausible idea that if the illuminati do exist, they must have thought of it already.

You could also turn it around and say that the Empire is actually good and the Resistance are the evil ones.

I work in the oil industry, and when I play with my work buddies we say that the resistance is an evil oil company, perhaps BP (not my employer by the way), and there are secret greenpeace employees among us, trying to stop us from destroying the planet. It makes it funny and personal. There's something highly entertaining about everyone pretending to be evil.

My two favorites are "Honda" and "Apple;" both are corporations that took over the world in 2027.
