I'm going on a city trip almost every year with 3 friends, but this time it's only 2. Normally we play "bieden", a 2vs2 normal card game we're addicted too (which I can't find anywhere on here btw, must be very local), but now I wonder what to take with me to play in the hotel / bar / whenever we see fit too fill some gaps when we need a rest or fill a gap.

I got a pretty decent collection of boardgames, but that doesn't fit into my backpack so it will have to be a card game. My favorite card games are 2 player so that's out of the question as well.

So far I can only come up with "Boonanza" and "Archaeology : the card game". Won't bring "Saboteur" as there are no kids involved, rather not bring stuff like Uno as well, that's not even too enjoyable with only 3 preople.

Need something not too hefty, but also not too simple, and a game that doesn't become boring after a few plays.
Anyone has some good suggestions?

Euchre

One of the best games ever, and perfect as a 4 player, 2 on 2 game.

*edit - plus you only need a deck of cards to play it, and you can even wager various trip duties on the outcome, such as picking up the tab at lunch, or making a beer run.

Basically 3 player Tichu, but I like it better.

Some others I have seen suggested here on the Geek:
San Juan
Glory to Rome
Innovation

Edit: Guess I took to long looking around, someone got most of my suggestions in before me.

Oh well...

Some 2 player games in small boxes that I would recommend are...

Hive Not a card game but can easily fit in a backpack
The Battle for Hill 218 Fun 2 player game..size of a regular deck of playing cards
FamigliaCan expand to 4 if you meet some folks who want to join you two.
Space Hulk: Death Angel – The Card Game Cooperative game and also expandable as above.

Two I've played and enjoyed:

No Thanks!

Guillotine

I recently picked up No Thanks! specifically to bring with me on my trip to Montreal. I'm sure it'll get some use around the house as well

Thought of San Juan as well, but might be a little bit too much on the table.

Innovation is on my wanted list, but hard to get where I live. Does seem harder than casual though

We're 3, sorry if it wasn't clear

I recently picked up Famiglia, didn't check if there were rules for 3 or more yet.

No you were clear...I just read it wrong...and the Famiglia comment about playing moire than 2 was a misplaced Cut and Paste...ok going back under my rock

+1 Fairy Tale

Palastgeflüster
Trump, Tricks, Game!

If it must not be a card game, nestorgames has some great games to carry with you.
For 3 players I´d off course suggest my Topology, but also Corporation, Hippos & Crocodiles with the Buffalos expension and if you prefers something with more luck, Way of the Dragon.

Race for the Galaxy? Fabulous 2-4 player. Doesn't take up much space. Near infinite re-playability.

This is a perfect opportunity to learn Skat!

It's a traditional 3 handed German card game with a medium complexity.

And if you bring along the cards to play Skat, that means you'll have many options of games to try out:

Hombre
Preference
Ulti
Vira
Ninety-Nine
Skitgubbe

I just did a quick read of the Skat rules ... damn it's like 5x more calculating than the normal game we play with 4 (which has a similar bidding system). I know someone won't like that or will never memorize the values ... Looks cool though.

Ninety-Nine looks great !

Skitgubbe might be something to learn as this year we're going to Stockholm and that game seems to be Swedish.

Fluxx

Expandable player size from 2-8, and is a single deck (unless you play with the expansions).

Easy to pick up, as well, since literally all of the rules are printed on the card faces.

Made it to my shopping list so far (looks like my next spree will include all card games instead of a boardgame or two this time)

Palastgeflüster
Trump, Tricks, Game!
Bargain Hunter
Lords of Scotland
Guillotine
No Thanks!

Might pick up Gang of Four for later occasions, looks great.

Can't find Fairy Tale in any of my favorite shops.

YMMV, but Gang of Four is much worse than Tichu in my opinion.

And if you are going to have less than 4 players, sounds like Haggis is the way to go. (though I haven't played that myself)
