Probably not, but I'll try using it, since I don't use my Facebook anymore anyway.

Just announced today. I can't get to it, because I get to Google through Google Apps.

http://plus.google.com

NYT article (paywall alert): http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/29/technology/29google.html

Wow, first I heard about that. The NYT article was interesting. Mixed feelings. On the one hand it would be nice to see facebook get competition and google is about the only company I can think of that has the clout needed to become a real competitor. On the other hand, google already has my mail, my videos, my phone, my contact list, my spreadsheets, my search history, my banner ad click history, etc...is it really a good idea to give any one company so much info about my online life?

Well, we'll see how it works out.

Not sure if this works like Gmail once did, but if you periodically get invites to hand out I'd be very interested in jumping on board.

I'm ready to bail on facebook, as soon as there's something better to migrate to.

Part of Google+ is putting people you regularly contact (through Gmail or your Droid phone) into "circles". My guess is at first they'll send invites themselves to people who are in a lot of people's circles to increase interactions between users.

Traitor! If I'd known that I'd never have wasted my time on your "Slots" team, whatever the hell that was.

Crap. I forgot about that. That's the only game I'm still playing.

Has anyone looked at Diaspora yet?

https://joindiaspora.com/

Supposedly an open source, privacy friendly alternative to Facebook.

I believe it's still in Alpha, but I'd be interested in knowing if it was any good.

The problem with new social media sites is that they're only as good as who's on them. I'm only on Facebook because I know a lot of people on Facebook, and it's a great way to stay in touch with them. But I've soured a lot on Facebook recently, and I'm thinking about life without it.

It would be nice to be on Diaspora or Google+, but I wonder how useful it would be if I only knew, say, 10 people there, as opposed to all the people I know on Facebook.

I hear Google+ supports asymmetrical friendships, meaning it's like Twitter in that you can follow someone by friending them, you don't need their consent, and they won't be following you unless they explicitly friend you. That means on Google+, you can follow celebrities and interesting people you don't necessarily know, which makes it a little more interesting.

The problem with any social network is who is on, correct, it's about convincing friends to cross over. If it sports asymmetrical friendships, that will be interesting as I prefer twitter to facebook. I wonder if you can choose who to include in to see updates?

You have the choice of limiting it to only those in your circles (or even specific circles), everyone within extended circles (ie people in the circles of people in your circles), or full public.

When was the last time something touted as a {device/application} killer actually killed that {device/application}?

2007: Facebook...the MySpace killer?
Also: New Facebook Platform a MySpace Killer?

MySpace was purchased for $580 million in 2005. It was sold today for $35 million.

Point for Octavian. Negative points for Jeff and, most especially, 545 million negative points for Rupert Murdoch.
