While it's something of a bane to purist gamers, sometimes circumstances force a player to leave in the middle of the game, or to be late to a session and join in after the others have started.

In some of our other games - Talisman or Arkham Horror for instance, it's not too big of a deal. You can easily add or remove a character, or even have another player play two characters if necessary.

With BSG's loyalty mechanic, does anyone have any good house rules for implementing this?

For leaving players, I figured you might do something like having the leaving player give all loyalty cards to another player, but haven't had a chance to try it. Whenever we've had an especially high risk of a player being unable to complete the game, we play something else instead.

Thoughts?

Sometimes, I'm lucky to have be able to play the dang thing, so yeah, time's moreso a factor for this game. Also like to add that Shadows Over Camelot actually has in the rules that if someone comes in late, just give him a coat of arms, play figure, and he'll take his turn as soon as it gets to him in turn order.

For people who need to leave early, a combo of the following....
--redo loyalty cards, re-creating the loyalty deck for that many players. So for 5p to 4p, take out one cylon card, and either add one Sympathetic Cylon card (from Pegasus), or one Cylon Symp card (base game), or just opt for FFG's no-symp variant (knock 1 off morale, food, and 2 off pop, revealed cylon gets to draw 3 cards at start of turn)

I'll add special cases for if the leaving player already revealed or didn't if I can think of them

--If u had 2 revealed cylons and the 2nd cylon left, you could let the lone, revealed cylon take control of both characters. He'll probably be even more bored playing as a revealed cylon, so the extra turns should be welcome, even if it skews things.

--If no revealed cylons, you could just convert the game to Final Fantay Games' No Cylon variant and finish the game off there. Be creative... draw a random super crisis card and cylon card and resolve those effects to make things more difficult if need be.

--cut your losses and switch to a shorter game to round out the night/day, such as Resistance [shrug]

For those who are arriving late...
--Looks like someone just volunteered for Helo cool He's still not completely unable to participate since he could stil contribute to skill checks or play interrupt cards with the initial 3 skill cards he draws and/or his 5 that he draws on his first turn while Stranded. Not to mention gauge the game unfold around and try to see who's acting suspiciously, but unless you guys can webcam/FaceTime him into the game, not much you can do about being late.

--The loyalty card makeup is the tricky thing... the Conflicted Loyalties in Exodus may be open-ended, but the exact science of cylohn cards are either 1 or 2 for 3 to 4p games, and 2 for 5p to 7p games.

If someone's going to be late and you all know of it ahead time, AND can't wait for him to show up first, then start with the no-cylon variant, THEN convert to a regular game when he shows up.

--If u didn't know about the person showing up, you could redo everyone's loyalty card and just go from there. New guy(s) get to sit down after grabbing a character stand and character sheet.

--ehh, again, there's always Resistance.
