This discount coupon was included in a recent eBay wargame purchase...

... too bad it expired in 1981.

What would this $3 be worth in 2011 dollars?

Back then five bucks an hour was decent money for a high school student or college kid.

When I started buying SPI games in 1972, most of them were selling for 6 bucks, and that was boxed (the white flat jobs with the counter wells). I'm a little fuzzy on what the prices had risen to in 1981, but I'm thinking maybe 10 bucks for a regular game, and 12 for quads, something like that. It was a pretty good coupon.

I have a 1979 SPI catalog.

Kursk: History's Greatest Tank Battle, July 1943 was going to be released with a price of $13 at the end of the year.

I don't recall individual game prices but I distinctly remember the 'six games for $36' deal in the late '70s and calculating exactly how many more lawns I'd have to mow or shifts I'd have to work to scrape together $36.

I can still see my first SPI catalog in my mind's eye: Armageddon, Leipzig, Winter War, Soldiers, Phalanx, Dark Ages, U.S.N., Barbarossa, Grenadier, Year of the Rat, Grunt, Borodino, it went on and on and I was utterly gobsmacked. Still get a wonderfully wistful feeling just thinking about it.
