I'm currently reading the rules and I am - as expected - a bit overwhelmed by the several exceptions. Would it reduce the learning curve to play a few rounds while ignoring those specific exceptions?

For now, I don't mind corrupting the balance of the game, I just want to learn the flow and main rules. Then when I'm more comfortable with the overall gameplay, I plan to add the specific cases. I guess this would also make it easier to remember most of them... Does it sound like a good plan?

Hi Ken,
I would think so yes. You can play the entire game without even looking at the Near East (probably the most complex 'exceptions'). Take it one step at a time, play the first few turns with normal moves/events, then try out SRs, etc etc.
The wargameroom.com program enforces the rules for you, you can load up two versions of the program and play against yourself for practice.
Cheers,
Nathan'

After months of playing this game, we still forget some of the exceptions... Thankfully, the board is labeled correctly for some of them, and there are some excellent compilations of them in the files section here on BGG, so we can print them and use them as player guides.

I've played POG only solo, and played the first time without the exceptions. It didn't seem to change anything much, especially given that I didn't really know what I was doing in terms of strategy. The second game I tried to use all the rules to the letter, and still missed a couple, but again to no ill effect.
After that, I pretty much remembered them all.
Good luck and have fun!

Hope it helps!

Another thing I did when I was learning was to visit the ACTS server and play through games between good players. I'd set the board up and follow along turn by turn. Some players provide easy-to-read ACTS transcripts and others don't, so look at several and find one that is good for the purpose.

Here's a link:

http://acts.warhorsesim.com/pog.asp

You can do other games that ACTS supports this way too.
