I just saw The Tree of Life yesterday, and I was surprised to really enjoy it, except for the last twenty minutes, which didn't ruin it for me, but definitely took me out of the film.

The dialog reminded me a bit of "Look Homeward, Angel," and I don't think I've seen a better exposition of Christian cosmology and ethics that I can remember offhand. I'm not much of a Malick fan - loathed "The Thin Red Line" - but in the context of prayer, his often annoying voiceover habit worked a little better for me.

I'm curious to get other people's reactions to the movie. What did you think?

I didn't like it at all. Not because of its ambition; I was fine with the dinosaurs and the cosmology and all (although I found the music in the space scene overbearing [LACRIMOSA!]).

I feel like in order to have properly appreciated the film, I need to have had an idyllic and religious (though occasionally harsh) childhood in Waco in the '50s. None of the above for me.

Or to put it another way: the movie is about an unhappy adult looking back on a happy childhood, whereas for me, it's the other way around. So I found the movie to be two and a half hours in air conditioning.

EDIT: I should say that I found it neither a decent movie nor BS. It's a very personal film, so either it's going to speak to you or it won't. It didn't for me, but I can see why others enjoyed it.
