Hello all.

I love excel. As such I really wanted to play around with some of the game statistics for the fun of it. Ask deep and probing questions like: What's the linear relationship between rating and number of owners? Does the number of mechanics in a game appear to the affect the rating? Is there an even relationship between number of mechanics and weight? Etc...

Well, one part of the my self-directed task is done. I've created an excel file to share with others that contains the Top 3x200.

What is the "Top 3x200" you ask? It is a data table that contains the following games:

Top 200 Ranked Games
Top 200 Most Owned Games
Top 200 Distinct Users (i.e. unique players)

All in all this includes 321 games (obviously there are overlaps), and excludes any game flagged as an expansion. I haven't done much "cool stuff" with the data yet. But I'll post things here when I get some fun graphs or other stats pulled together.

In addition to the Top 3x200 rankings, there is all the other game data included in the chart, including weights, votes, ownership/wishlist items, game players/length, 0-1 flags for mechanics and category, sum of mechanics + categories, etc.

For the time being, there are 98 games in the list that are in the top 200 for all three categories. These overlaps may tie into the idea of "Core" games, those that many people have, many people play, and are highly ranked (many people like). See below for more info about the "core" game idea. I list of these 98 games below.

Also, can you guess the game with the most Mechanics? The winner has 9 listed. Ouch!

You can also view the list directly on BGG, which I consolidated into my previously unsed "want to buy" list.

Some credit where credit is due:

First, I used the BGG2nandeck tool to export the Top 3x200 to a .csv file and import into excel. Kudos to N_and

Next, I was inspired by Tony's Top 100s: Owned vs. Played vs. BGG Rank: Core Games GeekList, which setup the basic approach for collecting this data.

Sounds interesting and I'd like to play with the data, but the link isn't working for me.

I found an error in it a reuploaded it a few minutes ago, maybe you happened to try and download it then? I just rechecked the download link and it worked for me.

The link opens up the google docs viewer window, but you can click the download text in the upper left to download the file directly.

EDIT: Is there a general BGG file section at all?

Good info. I do something similar with a frequently updated geeklist using 5 different categories (average/ratings/plays/players/owners) and track the top 250 games as they rise and fall.

Overall I think these types of alternatives are much better than the rankings here on BGG because they take into account many more factors.
