Subject: Real World Geek Gold value... rss

After going through Michael Pearsall's geekbay geeklist, seen here:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist.php3?action=view&listi...

I made a simple spreadsheet that compared the price of games on the geek marketplace to their geekgold selling price, in an attempt to find out how much GG is worth in the real world. The result?

1 GG = $0.32

in other words

$1 = 5.93 GG

If we were to factor in all of the geekgold auctions that have been taking place lately, we could get a much more accurate number.

Of course, this is not to be taken too seriously, just something fun to ponder.

According to this, I own almost $12 in GG!

Whoops again... I seem to have an error in my numbers. 1 U.S. Dollar is 3.33 Geek gold.

Interesting. Makes me want to take a larger sampling and refine the conversion rate!

Interesting. With an actual monetary value attached to GG, BGGers may strive to obtain more GG, which will cause inflation, and drive the exchange rate up, making GG less valuable. Economics at work!

Somewhere, I once ran across a statement that the exchange rate was generally about 3 GG to the dollar.

Don't forget that many of those GeekBay auctions included shipping, even international shipping in some cases.

I don't think you can do a conversion on GG. I may be wrong, but isn't an Avatar or GeekBadge the ultimate goal? Factoring in time, effort and the resources to collect enough GeekGold to buy an Avatar or Badge differs from person to person. It's just easier for some people to offer up a game they no longer care for and see if it gets them enough to pay the bill.

I think someone needs to put fifty GG up on eBay, just to see what happens.

That's the whole point, we don't know the dollar value on an avatar or badge so I just compared the price in Geek Gold of a game to its marketplace price in dollars. And by that, we know that an avatar is worth $10

(like I said, it was just something silly I came up with)

I used to think so, but then people started selling delicious games for GeekGold, so now my greed for GG has awoken!

I just earned 30GG in a GeekBay auction and may turn around and spend it on someone else's game, instead saving towards a badge.

Forever badgeless,

Yup, it's closely related to a fancy new web surfing method called: "read the whole thread before replying"

Which is similar to a super technologic bgg forum technique called "editing a mistake in your post instead of following up where it's likely to be missed"..

Sorry.. missed the followup. I did RTWFT, but too quickly.
