I purchased and then got hooked on The Resistance at Origins. During play we all found ourselves comparing this game to BSG. Once I got home I created a BSG re-themed version and got ArtsCow to print it for me.

Here is one of the pics but the rest are in the Creative section.

Hehe. I'm pretty sure everyone compares this game to BSG the first time they play it. I like to refer to it as "BSG without all the boring bits." and another gamer in my group coined the term "Spylon" for this game.

Both great games that scratch different itches in my experience.
Definitely see The Resistance getting played more because of the greater flexibility in number of players and shorter playing time.

See, given that this was around first I compare BSG to it, not the other way around. I've not considered retheming BSG to my 'first edition' of Resistance though. I don't know how red-suited cylons and black-suited humans would really work.

Are you sure about that? BSG was published in 2008, and I can't find anything on Resistance before early 2009.

Wow I'm surprised, I thought BSG was later. They came about around 6 months apart and Resistance was second. Thanks for the correction!

I love the resistance and keep pushing it on new groups, and one of the most common remarks is the "muddy" theme. I get tired of explaining it, and call the "red guys and blue guys" once in a while to speed things up. The theme is cool and different, but doesn't hit with the more casual groups I try this on.

A re-theme might make things easier on that end! Well done!

EDIT: To remove question about a link to the art that unintentionally could have been helpful to game pirates. (And not the GOOD kind of game pirates that plunder and pillage for victory points arrrh) Everyone SHOULD go out and buy a copy of this game, so that it gets super popular, and the publisher can afford to buy an official BSG license and re-print the game just for me! (OK, so I guess the rest of you could buy a copy as well...)

Given that it's a published game I don't think a printable copy will be displayed publically. All the PnP material was removed once there was an agreement to publish.

Perhaps if you discreetly ask the OP they might show you how they went about it...

Yeah, as George said, I did not feel comfortable posting a link to the ArtsCow deck. I really like the game and do not want to be involved with someone buying it from ArtsCow instead because of what I created.

Yes, the spy/resistance theme is actually a tad bit confusing at first. There is not an immediate identification by the players as to who the good guys are and who the bad guys are. Possibly because these days anti-government groups are just as likely to make you think of terrorist groups as they are to make you think of the French Resistance in WWII. With the group I first played with, there were so many BSG fans that the cylon/human description made everything click immediately when we described the game.

Maybe the publisher will obtain a BSG license and do their own re-theme. It *might* cannibalize some existing sales (and the BSG version would generate less profit per unit because of the license costs) but they could also change it up a little bit as well with character cards and abilities, separate loyalty cards, expanded plot cards, etc. cha-ching!

Good for you, sir. Stick to your guns. Too many people around here seem to get snarky when people won't publish files of games they've re-themed. If I could give you a hundred thumbs, I would.

Makes sense to me! I would never get snarky at you for sticking by the publisher! I own two copies of the game, and have bought 2 other copies as gifts, so it just never occurred to me that someone might try to use that to bypass paying for the game... especially since an artscow deck is almost as much as buying the game(GREAT value here!)

Sorry if I caused anyone to think otherwise, and stupid me for not thinking about that in the first place. (Especially stupid, since as I have jumped on people here more than once for implying that they would copy a game without first buying it...)

Sorry for the threadomancy, but I figured that it wasn't worthwhile to open a new thread, dealing with the same exact topic.

So, two days ago I asked for a reccomendation here and I then got The Resistance on the spot.
I played a try-out game the same night, and had a blast, so I decided to transform it into a "pocket-size" BSG.

I made some variants to the rules, to compensate some other variants.

So, here are the changes to the original The Resistance:

1) people decide which characters to take, among the 10 characters from the BSG base game (Baltar, Helo, Starbuck, Boomer, Roslin, Apollo, Adama, Chief, Zarek, Tigh).
None of these are pre-determined spies/cylons.
Each character has a specific OPG (once per game) ability
Roslin: she can change the outcome of a vote
Adama: he can re-initiate the mission briefing (mission assignements)
Tigh: before the mission briefing, can change the admirality (aka: leader)
Apollo: he can look at a mission card played by another player
Baltar: he can look at a loyalty card assigned to another player
Boomer: she can exchange loyalty with another player
Helo: he can decide to take part in a mission, even if not assigned to it
Zarek: he can play a mission failure, even if he's not a cylon
Starbuck: after the vote, she can choose a different player to partake at a mission
Chief: he can vote after the votes have been unveiled, but he has to do it pubblicly.

I, in practice, integrated some plot cards, as One time abilities, into the characters.

2) after the characters have been assigned, loyalty cards are also given out (with the same ratio as the original The Resistance).

3) Cylons/Spies DO NOT know who the other spies/Cylons are (this is to compensate the personal abilities, as some would become too powerful/useless, if the cylons who the others are).

The game works in the exact same way as the original The Resistance.

Some images have been inspired shamelessly copied from Robert's BSG-Resistance deck so 100% credit to his ideas which can be seen here:

In a few minutes, I will upload my version of these cards...

Thoughts about the rules?

Here are 9 of the 10 characters:

The backs are the same, but without the ability (which has the double purpose of 1) playing without the variant posted above, and 2) knowing when the ability has been used

these are success/Failure Vote (YES-NO) cards (as I said, some images have been copied from Robert's deck):

These are loyalty cards (Cylon and Human) and the Admiral-Leader Token:

C&C are welcome.

P.S. for the same reasons Robert hasn't posted his files, I won't post mine.

Why would a Resistance member ever fail a mission? Or perhaps I don't understand the power correctly.

Anyway, awesome!

I know it might sound strange... BUT, to compensate these powers, cylon spies don't know eachother... so failing a mission on purpose might (might) deceive the cylons, especially in larger groups, so it is hard to know who the other cylons are.

Oh. Really? Spies don't know who each other are!? Why not? You're changing the game now.

In any case, why would it matter? Why does Resistance need to trick spies into thinking a Resistance member is a spy? And it's a huge gamble: you might trick the spy, but you are also giving the spy 1 of the 3 points the spy needs to win.
