So I caved and bought a copy of this game yesterday - I thought my son would love it. He's six, so I'm going to simplify the game by leaving out the tactics cards, but he can otherwise handle it.

Anyhow, I'm reading the graphic novel to him so he can get a sense of the story line and I keep on stumbling over pronouncing "Lucignians" and "Wretcheridians". Something in both names just misfires synapses in my pronunciation centres or something.

I look at "Lucignians" and I want to say "loo-SIG-nee-ans" - is this correct? Possible alternate pronunciations might be "loo-sig-NEE-ans" and for the hard "c" crowd (Like pronouncing "Luciano" in Italian), "loo-CHIG-nee-ans" (or even "loo-chig-NEE-ans")

The graphic novel has the origin of the nickname for the race everyone ends calling the "Wretcheridians" as being a mash-up of the abbreviation for their home system (RTCH or somesuch - I don't have the graphic novel at hand) and the constellation it's in, Eridanus (an Eridani-XX star, I can't remember the number). "RTCH-Eridani"

Anyhow, just looking at it, you'd assume "RETCH-er-RID-ee-ans", right?

... but Eridani is pronounced /ɨˈrɪdənaɪ/ "ih-RID'n-eye"

so is it "RETCH-ih-RID-ee-ans"? "RETCH-ih-ri-DEE-ans"? Or something else?

For now (until someone corrects me), I'm pronouncing Lucignian as "loo-SIG-nee-an" and Wretcheridian as "RETCH-er-RID-ee-an".

Was anyone at a WOTC demo where the names were said out loud?

Yeah, these are absolutely trifling details. I'm not going to lose any sleep over them. It's not something I'm passionate about... I'm just curious. In the end you just call them Wretches and "Bobby", right?

It might matter (to some extent) if they ever come out with an expansion featuring Lucignian ships.

Lucignian pronouncskiation guide: Luck-ih-jn-eye-nnnn.

Repeat it several times...faster and faster...until it sounds "natural" in your mouth. Lukijnyen. (I helps to use a Polish or Russian accent.)

You're on your own with those Wretches. LOL

For what it's worth...I think everyone just calls them Wretches.

"Luck-ih-jn-eye-nnnn."... Really? Or are you joking?

I wouldn't have even guessed at that way of pronouncing it.

It's spelled 'Lucignian' but it's pronounced 'Throatwarbler Mangrove.'

I wish to kill you, be at rest as to that, but to kill you quietly in a snug, remote place, where you will not be able to boast of your death to anybody
